lost post & login
Hi Scot,

I just typed a three or four paragraph introduction and whe I clicked "post message" it somehow disappeared

When I went to report the bug, I had to login again to get a bug report form

hmmm...

tester -- 01/24/2004, 09:57:04 -- #1074967024
Interesting.

Let me know if it happens again.

I also fixed the thing where the system wasn't showing which rooms had new messages!  That's the backbone of the system!  New people probably thought, "What the heck is this supposed to be??"

Wow....
Im so lost its not even funny.... I cant click on topic names like in the old forums, it seems disorganized, or mabe theres somethin i dont see. Eh...thres too many sub-forums, or "rooms" as there called...i liked the simple design before where you just click the topic name and BAM, there you are. Mabe im the minority here, but i liked the old ones better, although this clearly shows more effort and skill...Dont you think that any noobs that come here will get confused and leave? Just my 2 cents...is this even where this should be posted?

You are right- it's COMPLETELY different than the other one.  But this one has some advantages. Hopefully those advantages will become obvious as time goes on.

All you have to remember is to click on the ROOMS link in the left menu. It will give you a list of the current rooms.

An example of one of the nice things this system can offer is the lesson area.  Each lesson can be discussed, new files can be uploaded by anyone, etc.  The threads will never get lost, new messages will always show up when you log in or click System Info (top right).

Give it a little bit of time.

Newbies will be confused at first. Hopefully once discussions get going it will be OK.

a little lost
For what it's worth, I'm having a hard time keeping up with the menus...especially the Persona Rooms link - sometimes it's there on the left, and sometimes it's not.  I guess I'm not easily "getting" the directory structure...

Before I logged in I somehow found a list of Personal Rooms for Barry, Ryan, Mike and 7 (I think)  Mike and 7's room had (2) next to their names which I assumed meant they had two messages in their rooms....when I went there, 7 did have two but Mike had none...I clicked on "Display Old Message" and still ended up empty...I went back and logged in and couldn't seem to find that Personal Room menu again...hmmm

If I'm getting a headache, you must have one too - sorry!  It is going to be very cool though!

Whacky -- 01/25/2004, 08:35:36 -- #1075048536
screen size
I too am having a problem using 800/600...I am having to scroll from left to right as well -including the logo...I'm used to it though:)

And Netscape 4.xx....the menus are about twice as wide as the messages...but who uses it anymore anyway? :)

Whacky -- 01/25/2004, 08:41:13 -- #1075048873
more on personal rooms
Okay..I found the Personal Rooms link again while logged in and Mike did not have a (2) by his name...I logged out, went back and it did show a (2) bys his name but of course there are no messages in his room...I wonder if it's somehow showing the number of messages in 7's room but without his messages???  what do I  know??

Scot -- 01/25/2004, 09:24:59 -- #1075051499
No- the ones in Mike's room are private message.  I mentioned somewher eelse that I do store which are private and public, but I haven't had the chance to utilize that data yet. I'm working on inserting a "regular" forum into a room as one of the room functions right now.

As for the personal rooms- to see the halls, or main topics, you need to go to a window room. In this system, the Lobby is the only window room. Once you go to the lobby, you'll see what halls are available.

To get around that, just click on the ROoms List link at the top left of the screen and a breakdown of the BBS structure will appear- you cna then click oin any room.

You can also click on the System Info link to list things like which rooms have messages in them ready to read, regardless of what hall you happen to be in.

I will reduce the width of the system to 758- I believe this is the widge that will not scroll on monitors 800 wide.

New width settings
Hey- let me know if the new width of the system works for you guys. I changed it to 758 and tried setting my monitor to 800x600 and it looked ok (HUGE, but ok).

I'm used to 1280x960 on my secondary monitor (17"), and 1600x1200 on my main monitor (19"). People who see them say they can't even read the words :)

The logo image is 756x66, however, I was still having to scroll side to side.

Double Post
Yeah, that's weird. Actually, the message ID shows that the posts were written to the database 6.5 minutes or so away from each other.  Which of course is impossible since they double posted.

Well, we'll try to work it out.  You aren't using  the "back" key on your browser for anything are you?  Not that it would really make a lot of difference.  I also noticed a room got "double made", but in this case the room has the same ID number.

I have some ideas on how to get rid of both those problems...

Scot -- 01/26/2004, 12:47:33 -- #1075150052
Double things
Ah, you know what might have caused the doubled up problems- I'm doing a lot of uploading of minor fixes, enhancements, and stuff like that. The system is composed of 15 or so different files that contain functions. SO I'm always uploading a file here or there- if you are doing something and I'm uploading a "control" file, it is possible the system could get confused and do certain things twice. I can shut the system down (maintenance mode) but for quick uploads, I don't think it's necessary. Hopefully :)

New message display
Hi Folks,

Let me know if this works for you.

When viewing new messages in a room, then oldest messages are displayed first, with newer messages coming up under them.  This is how it has been.

However, when you click on "display old messages" I changed it so that the newest message comes up first instead of the oldest. Most of the time when clicking "display old messages", we want to know what the discussion was recently instead of seeing the first messages.

What do you think?

It might be nice to refer back to something someone said earlier.

File Upload Notification
At your behest (doncha love fancy words like that?), MT uploaded a PDF file of the "Universal Scale" post to my room.

That's all cool and it looks great, but there should be some kind of notification on the login welcome screen that there is a NEW FILE UPLOAD to whatever room.

New files are just as important as new posts and I'm sure that everyone would like to share in the excitement of a new file hitting the boards.

Don't you agree?

I tried logging off and logging back on, but that didn't help either.

I know I didn't visit all the new files so there should've been some left.

Scot -- 01/30/2004, 10:44:17 -- #1075488256
The first time people are visiting with the "new files" reporter turned on, there may be some anomolies. After the first time, it will be OK.

Some rooms show they have files when they don't. That's because I had forgotten to put in  something that would decrement the total files for a room when a file was deleted. However, that should be OK now and I will manually adjust some rooms that have the wrong total files number associated with them (once i put that utility in!)

What you can read when you're not logged in

It seems odd that if you're not logged in that you can read all the public messages in the personal rooms, BUT you CAN'T read the threaded Lobby Lounge messages.

It would make more sense the other way around.

Why force the merely curious to log in to read the main forum messages?

Once they've read a couple of threads and seen the helpful style of forums here, they'll naturally want to "sign up" (if they are pianists).

But making them sign up before they even know if they want to be a part of this forum, and  giving out their already over-spammed email address, I think is asking a lot.

The fact that uncommitted lurkers can go into personal rooms and read the stupidity that goes on in some of them (mine especially) could be a real turn off that may actually prevent them from wanting to sign up on this site.

Just my 2

I just uploaded a file to my room but it does not appear in the file list for that room.  I presumed I'd done something wrong in the uploading process so I tried it again and there are still no files in the file list.  However, if I use the search facility, I am able to download the files I posted.  Why don't they appear in the file list for my room?

Also, I have obviously uploaded the same file twice.  Is it possible for us to delete files from our rooms or do we have to ask you to do it?  This could make it irritating if we plan on updating any of the files we post.

Thanks in advance for your help

File listing bug
Ok, the files list bug is squashed.  I was in the middle of adding soime "hidden/support" file functionality when I uploaded the file midway through the project.

Anyway, files all list and all uploads were saved.

The support file deal is kind of cool. It will allow you to upload, say, an HTML file with images, but you'll be able to hide the images so people can't see them in the file list. It will be somewhat complicated, but it will also work well. The main reason I'm  doing it is so I can put up Sibelius files and let visitors view and print them using the Sibelius Scorch plugin.

Could private messages be excluded from the new files counter?
I've (already) gotten in the habit of going to the rooms list and clicking on those of interest showing new messages but then sometimes when I get there the new messages will be private so there is nothing to see.  Perhaps this is too complicated a request and it's certainly not a show stopper or really a bug.

Scot -- 02/05/2004, 13:17:49 -- #1076015868
Well, there is a way. But the problem is making sure people who have private messages know there are new messages in those rooms. I agree that it would be nice, though.

I'll be taking some time off this stuff for a little whle, though.  My dog is terminally ill right now (dog and best friend, that is) and I think I'm going to take her back to Colorado for one final road trip.  She's a Colorado dog, not a Washington dog, and deserves to be laid to rest where she came from. Yeah, no kidding.  I was just telling someone that I would be a most different person if it weren't for my dog.  The urine test showed no poisons in her system, so there is a slight possibility that it is actually a bacterial infection in the kidneys.  I've put her in the "hospital" for three days of IV and antibiotics to see if the levels of toxins in her blood come down.  If they do, I might have a second chance. That would be cool, no question about it.  I'll never get anything done here then- I'll be spending all my time adventuring with my dog :)

It's no wonder that you're fully occupied with looking after your friend. LJP Real Time Chat

LJP Real Time Chat has never worked for me.

There's something that you have to download, and I could just never seem to get it to work.

I use Mozilla (mainly because you can kill popups) but it seems like Mozilla isn't too plug-in friendly.

Anyway, can't you just up the character limit on pchat?

It works fine for chatting for me otherwise.

7

Scot -- 02/10/2004, 13:52:05 -- #1076449925
Hmm, I use netscape 7.1 and the chat thing works fine for me.

The way I have pchat set up is that 254 characters is the limit unless I really want to make my db messy... I'll consider ways around it or ways to enhance it.

MId download problem
HI how are you scott?

I can't seem to download any midis. I get a message window stating, "no such interface supported" after I right-click and "save target as" Do you have any Idea what could be wrong?
Please tell me what you think ok? Thank you very much.

You can not right-click on a file and save it. The reason I had to make that change is that people were linking to midi files and using up my bandwidth without actually logging into the site.

I have some security measures I'm working on and once I finish those up, you'll be able to right click on ANY file and save it directly to your computer.

Sorry for any inconvenience- the dishonesty of the few always affect the rest of us, unfortunately.

Clicking on a midi file did not begin playing.

A link for "save to file" came up and that worked fine, but now I have to go find and delete it.

Hmm, it works for me. Do you have a default midi player installed?  What usually happens when you download midi files?  Just trying to figure things out- I drastically updated the code that controls file handling yesterday and today.

Whacky -- 11/05/2004, 21:26:27 -- #8672
I tried some midis in "midi moment" and "old site midi"   When I clicked on those I got a new browser window showing the room with no messages...when I right-clicked - it wanted to save as an htm file...

when I viewed all  the messages in the Bug Reprts room, there was no New message" form to leave this message.  I had to leave the room and come back.

I just clicked on a goofy bush pic I uploaded in a thread about voting in the Lobby.  The browser openend a new window and showed me a page of Lobby threads from February instead of the pic...

Scot -- 11/06/2004, 18:13:19 -- #8704
Ok, it's altogether possible that all three bugs are fixed- midi, the picture, and the thing where the enter a mesage box is not showing up at the bottom.  let me know!

I just found out the hard way that if you hit "escape" after writing a message it deletes the entire thing.

If you immediately hit Ctrl-Z, you can bring it back.

But if you hit "escape" twice it's gone forever.

(The reason I hit "escape" was because a drop down menu popped up when I meant to hit something else)

Scot -- 11/06/2004, 19:59:40 -- #8712
That doesn't happen to me- that is definitely a browser thing.  But you're using Firefox, right?  Hmmm... I hit escape and nothing happens :)

7 -- 11/06/2004, 21:51:36 -- #8717
Happened in IE, didn't happen in Netscape.

I'm not using my own computer since the "burn-out" so I can't throw new stuff on it.

Whacky -- 11/06/2004, 22:06:34 -- #8719
The pic thing works great!

The midi thing is still acting goofy...when I right click on a link to save, it wants to save with the name scotcit.mvc.htm, no matter which file I try...

When I left click I get a new browser window (Firefox) that wants me to down load Quictime plugin, which then fails to install..hmmm...don't know why I need Quicktime to play a midi file...

Scot -- 11/07/2004, 08:26:24 -- #8725
Ok, I think the quicktime thing is just a default midi player. The deal is that you probably need to reinstall the midi player you use, or somehow re-associate .mid and .midi files with your midi player.

I just let the quicktime player do it  for me, works fine.

The right click problem is different. The security I have set up changes the name of the downloads directory rather often, so even though you can play the file while the directory name changes, downloading it with a static link won't work, so if you wait five minutes, right clicking that link won't work.

I will consider other options. I have something in mind that might work just fine.

Whacky -- 11/07/2004, 08:29:34 -- #8726
yeah...I tried that but I guess Firefox and Quicktime were not getting along...they both sat there and looked at me..I got a message saying that the install was successful, but when I tried to play the file, it wanted me to go through the whole  thing again...probably has nothing to do with your end:)

I posted a new file yesterday at 7's Heaven, but on the pre-login screen under the "newest files" section it's not listed.

The "newest files" lists a few of your midis dated 2/21/04 as being the latest.

Not that I care  about the publicity, but I suspect something is not working properly.

Multi-room search results.
Scot, maybe I'm doing something wrong but this has happened a couple of times.  I did a search and it returned some rooms to check.  I went to the first, used Back to get back to the list and now the rest of the rooms say there are no messages visable for viewing.  Not sure how to get them back.  Other rooms reached through normal means seem to be fine.

Scot -- 04/08/2005, 13:34:23 -- #12598
Hmm, I tried it but it didn't do it for me. It would be really hard for the system to reset all your new messages by doing a search because the code to do that isn't part of the search functions.

ANything else you could possibly be doing?

sdm -- 04/08/2005, 13:39:21 -- #12599
Well, it's worse than resetting the messages.  If I click show all it continues to say there are no viewable messages.  I must be doing something but I sure can't see what.

Scot -- 04/08/2005, 13:45:36 -- #12601
Ah, you know what?  There's a problem with how room sare displayed in search results. I've been planning on fixing that for a long time. right now you may have to simply keep in  mind what room had the results you're looking for and then going to the Room Map and getting to the room that way... I plan on doing some work on the system pretty soon here.  Files and searching are two of my main areas of interest in the next programming session.

Not a bug but this seemed like the best place to post
Thought this might interest you from today's Langa List (btw I highly recommend it, see www.langa.com if you don't already get it.)
1) FireFox Pros And Cons

For an industry built on logic--- at their deepest level, computers are  logic circuits--- blatant illogic somehow manages to cloud many issues.

Take FireFox http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/ , for example, a very nice browser from Mozilla.Org http://www.mozilla.org/ . It's free, Open Source, and the result of literally years of development. It's also a cross-platform application, available for Windows, Mac, and Linux--- a huge plus in computationally diverse environments because the configuration and training/learning curve is basically the same, no matter what platform the browser's installed on. Its human language support also is extensive, with versions in everything from Afrikaans to Welsh. No question: it's impressive software.

Some also like it simply because it's not from Microsoft. I think this approach has some merit: Whenever Microsoft loses serious competition in any software category, it grows complacent, and the pace of innovation slackens. IE6, for example, came out in 2001; an eternity ago, in computing terms. Except for a boatload of security updates and patches, it's still basically the same browser it was then.

But, US-CERT (United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team), a partnership between the Department of Homeland Security and  the public and private sectors that impartially tracks all manner of security issues in operating systems and major applications, shows that the list of IE's current vulnerabilities is shorter than those for FireFox, Mozilla, and the other alternate browsers. Likewise, it also lists fewer Windows' vulnerabilities than for the other OSes.

The last time I mentioned a similar US-CERT finding, by the way, Linux partisans leapt up to tell me that US-CERT didn't know what it was doing. Linux *couldn't* have more security flaws than Windows! Everyone *knows* that Open Source software is so much better than anything from Microsoft--- right?

Well, to the dismay the more rabid anti-Microsoft partisans, reports from other independent observers corroborated CERT's findings.

For example, between July 1 and December 31, 2004, Symantec documented 13 serious vulnerabilities affecting Microsoft Internet Explorer, but found 21 vulnerabilities affecting each of the Mozilla-based browsers.

But don't take my word for it--- read the reports for yourself, see the methodologies for yourself, and decide for yourself: The article posted now (free!) at http://www.informationweek.com/story/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=160900911 has all the details and links you'll need.

I wrote that article to try to help readers interested in FireFox in particular and Open Source in general to make an informed decision. There are many, many excellent, proven, objective benefits to switching to Open Source software--- but there's also a lot of misinformation, and some very, very *bad* reasons to switch.

For example, the "common knowledge" that FireFox is "more secure than IE" simply is  false. Switching to FireFox for that particular reason--- in the belief that you'll magically and automatically be more secure--- is just plain wrong.

But again, don't trust me, or any third party: Come see the source material for yourself, and make up your own mind. It'll only take a few minutes, and one way or the other--- whether you agree or disagree with me--- you'll have the facts at hand, and so can make an informed judgment, rather than one based on "common knowledge."

I'm no expert, but it seems to me most attacks are geared toward Microsoft products.  Simply using a non-MS browser and email client would significantly reduce your risk of attack.

I've been using Firefox for several months now.  I installed  it on 5 computers.  I still run AdAware, Spybot and Norton AV scans weekly on all machines, but have literally had no threats or system hangs, since I switched to Firefox.

Scot -- 04/18/2005, 13:19:40 -- #12989
Though there may be more vulnerabilities in Firefox, they are not the same kind of problems that are found in Microsoft Internet Explorer.

For example, IE makes it simple for an attacker to completely take over your system because of how integrated IE is into the windows OS platform, whereas Firefox is not integrated at all.  Though security problems still exist in Firefox, there are a few things to keep in mind.

Microsoft is built on profits, so they need to keep their source in-house.  Firefox is for the good of the community, so when there is a problem, there are literally hundreds of high end programmers (thousands of hackers) looking at the code to find the problems and figure out the best way to fix it.  In MS land, you've got the same team working on IE that's been in place for a while, and as a developer, it's nearly impossible to find your own bugs sometimes.

Another reason to support firefox is to get microsoft to be more accountable for their stuff.  As soon as MS gets some industry competition, their quality control goes WAY up.  If they don't have competition, there is no reason for them to create a good product.

Take Linux and Windows.  Windows XP has now, with SP2, turned into a fine and fairly strong OS. I'm even considering installing it as a seperate OS on my machine for test purposes now. I use win2k but there are is now software that only runs on xp, unfortunately...

Anyway, back to the browser.  The stance that MS takes is this: open source, how can it be more secure?  Everyone can see what's going on!

Linux stance is this:  Open source, much more secure, BECAUSE everyone can see what's going on.

The bottom line, though, is this: those who use Firefox experience a much lower level of system hangs and software intrusions into their system. This is a fact and no article or research group can refute it.  Those who use IE generally suffer from slower systems and unexplained system  hangs at time.

So the choice is a personal once and I think it behooves anyone who is curious to give firefox a try and see if it works for them.

Searching the Lobby Lounge

Is the Lobby Lounge not included in the rooms that are searched by the search function on this site ? I don't seem to get any results from the Lobby Lounge, even when searching for common words like "transcribe".

Scot -- 05/02/2005, 13:56:53 -- #13476
I just did a search in "threads" for "Put It Where You Want It" and the Lobby Lounge came up. I am in the process of enhancing searches, so perhaps there is a bug in there. Eventually it will be squashed, with all the little  bug legs and other messy bug parts being whisked away with the virtual trash sweeper demon.

hmmm....I just posted a reply in the Lobby...afterward I clicked on "Welcome Stats" and got the fl=ollowing list of rooms all shoing "new files" in the Lobby

Jazz Lessons
Master Classes
Midi an Sheetmusic
Monthly Standards
Off Campus
Personal Rooms
Root

This happened a couple of days ago too, but I didn't document it, and I couldn't reproduce it so I chalked it up to "one of those things"

This is kinda strange because there is no "list  files" in the Lobby...

Whacky -- 05/04/2005, 12:31:12 -- #13533
I'll email you a screen shot...

Some strange things have happened in last days here in LJP.
I try to delete a file in my room and screen skip to files in Lobby Lounge.
Hits counter during a lot of days is the same.
In "userlog" today 05/10/2005 i see newest enters on 05/07/2005.
When i send a post it doesnt appear in screen... then i click again on send and it appears twice.

My LJP pages are frozen
Hi Scot:
My LJP pages are frozen from 05/07/2005.
Hits counter is always 26.192 at Albetan's Area. 5.753 in Jazz en Espaol.
If i send a message i can not see it in my screen.
I can not delete nor change my files.
When i try to delete a file screen skip to files in  Lobby lounge.
All programs in my computer are working O.K. minus LJP.

Scot -- 05/17/2005, 18:19:15 -- #13907
Albetan- do you use the "logout" link when you are finished on LJP?

Send me a private message with your login information so I can login to your account and see what you are seeing.

Hi Scot:
Thanks for promoting my room as the most extensive latin piano resource on the net...

My LJP is frozen from 05/07/2005  at 20:15:32

Im entering LJP with other nickname and so i see that everything is right for other people and so i can read messages and threads.
When i enter as Albetan, everything is frozen.
All my computer is O.K. Only in LJP im finding those bugs.

Remember you have installed Albetans Area.... I cant enable upload or download files in my room administration.
Files list disappeared at Albetans.
If i try to delete a file then screen skip to files in Lobby lounge...

It's not possible to send a private message. When i try it screen appears blank with spaces for login.

Thanks in advance for fixing my room.
Albetan.

albetan -- 05/20/2005, 14:32:28 -- #14001

Now i have uploaded a nice file "Learning Salsa 2". Enjoy it.

albetan -- 05/20/2005, 17:28:05 -- #14015
May be somebody as a harker came into my LJP page, because i never click on "logout"
Everything was very strange here. I installed other brownser and it was suddenly fixed.
Now i always "logout" when i finish my LJP session.

HI Scot, do you think it is possible to check the messages in the Lobby Lounge room in a reverse order? There is so good material written there but I just can never access the very first threads because I spend the time clicking on "next". Thanks!

Loss of capital letters.

In the thread "Group Jazz vs Solo Jazz", I just looked at my post and notice that all of the letters I'd capitalized are small.

This is odd, and for a music forum it could cause misunderstandings such as  the difference between a two-five-one progression in Major vs in minor.

Hard part is making the system intelligent enough to pick up on profanity while leaving the bits and pieces of words alone and at the same time, don't bog down the system with checking for bad words. It will evolve and become less buggy as I have time to work on it.

Hi Albetan,

Allow me to take a stab at this...when typing a message look to the right of "force message formatting" and you will see the codes...

Scot -- 06/28/2005, 09:34:19 -- #15716
It's right there, easier than you think.

For example, you start out writing italic by putting an opening square bracket, then the letter i, then the closing square bracket, just like the example above.

Like below, but no spaces in the code:

[ i ] this will be italic [ /i ]

This will translate to:

this will be italic

the bass = bderrier bug is still there -- I thought this was fixed, given all of the discussion about it, plus the problem that "derrier" is meaningless in any language I've learned...and any language anyone's learned...bears mentioning.

My default home page is LJP, when I opened up another browser, I got the Red Hat Stronghold test page.

Just to test, I hit the LJP link under favorites. the Red Hat Stronghold test page came up  again.

The first time that happened, I assumed that Scot was doing some kind of maintenance. So I just wlaked away and came back a couple of hours later.

The same thing this time, I just waited a day and next time it popped up just fine.

But if it happens again I'll do the "clear cache" thing.

Seeing Fred Brown's recent post reminded me that he had made a request to Jazz+ about elaobrating on a certain topic that J+ had brought up last month.

In order to find the thread was easy enough: I went to search, change the criteria to "threads", typed in "Fred Brown" and immediately the link to the post came up.

* * * * * * *

Gripe

The name of this thread is: Planning Solos

But when searching within a thread the NAME OF THE THREAD is  nowhere to be found in the search results.

Even if the search brings you into the middle of the thread the name of the thread itself needs to be visible.

That's not the real buggy part though.

* * * * * * *

Bug

I typed a message at the bottom of that thread, and hit the "Save Message" button.

Since it was the most recent post on the site, common sense would dictate that it would be bumped to the top of the Piano Lounge's thread list.

It did not.  Although the posting was successful, it did not bump it to the top of the list - the thread stayed stayed right where it was.

* * * * * * *

Since I did not know the original name of the thread, I was obliged to do a manual search to find the thread and then write another post to effect the bump to the top.

* * * * * * *
Observations:

Responses to threads found via 'search' are not bumped.

Manually searching for thread names is a pain.

Thanks!
