Major email scam alert!
Hi folks,

Never ever give out your credit card/atm card number, PIN, or anything like that online just because someone is asking!

There is an FDIC/FBI alert about this one:

http://www.fdic.gov/news/news/press/2004/pr0604.html

I know  that no one here would ever be silly enough to give out that kind of information online, but please pass this on to your Moms, Dads, Grandmas- those folks who might not understand that this is a devious scam.

Pchat and Real Chat
Hi Folks,

Here's a good use for the Pchat link you see when you click on "userlog" at the top of the screen. When you see someone you'd like to chat with, pchat them and ask them if they'd like to chat. If so, you guys can click on  the LJP Real Time Chat link found at the lower left section of the page. That link will bring up a for-real chat page.

File uploads
Hi Folks,

I've made a few changes with regards to files.

Legal binary files (zip files, etc) will download upon being clicked as usual.

Image files (gif, jpg, or png) will be displayed in a new window upon being clicked.

PDF files will also display in a new window.

If you use Sibelius and want to upload music examples, sibelius files will automatically load into a new window and be visible IF the Sibelius Scorch plugin is installed: http://sibelius.com/products/scorch/

Let me know if you notice any problems with the new stuff (or old for that matter).

hey folks- the great, and legendary, Phil Woods got back to me with an email today that has his Top Ten Tunes.  If you are interested, visit the Top Ten Tunes room to see what ten songs he thinks every jazzer should know.

Be sure to visit his site: http://www.philwoods.com and support guys like this- guys who take time to do little things like giving me his top ten list.

Phil Woods is one of the greatest be-bop sax guys there has ever been.  I'm working on transcribing the master class he did at the Port Townsend jazz workshop.  Following are a couple stories he related about Bird.

One day Phil was taking lessons from Lee Konitz as a young teen (12 I believe) in NY.  He had to travel three hours by train to get to NY city from where he lived, and he did that once a week.  Some of his young jazz friends ran into him after the lesson and said that Bird was playing a gig somewhere nearby.  So they all took off and found the place, but Bird was on break. So they snuck back stage and what did they find? Bird was sitting in the middle of the floor with a great big cherry pie in front of him.  Bird looked up and said, "Boys, you want some cherry pie?"

What a memory!

Another great story, and this one hits more to the core of a lot of jazzers, is that one day Phil was playing at a strip club. He was 18 or so and by this time all the jazzers in NY knew who he was.  His job at the strip club was to play the theme from Harlem Nocturn each time a stripper walked out. If you are not familiar with this theme, watch any old Private Eye movie- it's the sultry song that a breathy sax plays whenever a "sexy dame" walks into the room.  So, Phil is playing this for each dancer and one of his friends runs in and says, "Bird is playing across the street!"

Well, this whole night Phil had been hating his sax.  The sax was bad, it sounded bad, it couldn't play in tune. The mouthpiece was all wrong and wouldn't hold a tone, and the reed was bad too.  Even the neckstrap sounded bad. Phil knew he had to get a new horn because this current horn was ruining his career.  He thought if he wandered over and saw Bird playing, maybe Bird would give him some inspiration.

So he walked into the place where Bird was.  Some guy was on drums... well, a home-made pie-pan style of drum kit.  The bass playing could have been playing one of those wash-tub basses from Kentucky.  Bird himself was playing an old Bari held together by rubber bands, glue, and tape.  After the tune Phil said, "Mr Paker, I have an alto across the street- do you wnat to play it?"  Bird said yes, so Phil went and got his horn.  He gave it to Bird and all of a sudden the most beautiful sounds came out of it.  In an instant Phil realized that the horn does not make the player.

Remember this!!  The horn, or piano, does not make the player.

I have a tiny little spinnet. Hell yes, I'd  love to have a nice sounding grand piano to play on, but we don't always get what we want. So we play what we have and realize that it's the player that makes a good sound, not the instrument.

The great Jerome Gray in Seattle doesn't even have a real piano at his house. He has some horrible little keyboard and some sort of old-time Rhodes style keyboard.  He is till one of the greatest jazz pianists still alive today.

Ok, I'm done :)

New stuff
Made some enhancements, added some new stuff, you might not notice, but then again  you might.

We have a CD Review and Book Review threaded forum now. Have fun!

Also- anyone who has private rooms, let me know if you want to have your room  turned into a threaded forum like The Lobby is. It's easy to do, and in the more busy rooms, it might make it easier for discussions.

My apologies to Internet Explorer users - IE is so bad when it comes to compromising security in your computer, that I want to make sure you know it and that you at least give Firefox a try.

So... to that effect, all IE users will see a message under the logo pertaining to switching to Firefox.  People already using Firefox will not see that message.

File system
If anyone experiences difficulty in downloading files, let me know. I've changed how the file system works so that it is more secure and leachers can't link to our files.  Last month alone, over 10,000 files were downloaded from OTHER sites linking to files here. I want people to come here to get their files.

So, as I upgrade the system, there may be some burps.

Spelling Checker
Here's another reason to use firefox: It has a free extension that allows you to spell check your dialoge boxes.

For those of you using Firefox (hey, you ALL should be using it!  Click on the firefox graphic near the top of the screen for more info) if you go to the firefox website (click on the little round thing near the upper right corner of your browser) and check extensions.

The ones I really enjoy using are:

Add Bookmark Here - puts a little "add here" link within your book mark tree so you don't have to spend so much time managing

Zoom Image: gives you some neat right-click image utilities such as zooming

Spell Checker: spell check your dialoge boxes (such as these messages)

Dictionary Search: highlight any word on a web page, right click, and automatically have it display the meaning of the word

Tabbrowser Preferences: neat stuff that I personally like in dealing with the tabbed browsing of Firefox

Remember, firefox can not be affected by adware, spyware, or other malicious web page content.  That's the only reason I'm pushing it- for your own safety. I don't get anything for it, I just think it's a very very good way of browsing the net.

Max Message Size
Oh, I forgot to mention that if you happen to go over the maximum allowed message size, the system now gives you an error message and lets you go back and edit your message instead of just saving the part that fits into the buffer and deleting the rest.

The max size, by the way, is 10,000 bytes for security reasons.

I switched to Firefox after seeing the link in your pages.
It's really fine. Good advice Scot! (I wonder if I can uninstall IE without crashing my Windows2000 system...)

Except this: each time I click on a midi file, it opens a window and says that I need to install Quick Time 6.5.1 plugin, although I have already installed it twice (and it's quite long to install because it installs iTunes too).
I have searched in the Firefox plugin directory: there's a QuickTimePlugin.class, a npqtplugin.dll and a npqtplugin2.dll. Strange...

Scot -- 12/01/2004, 09:52:41 -- #9379
First, don't download itunes when you download quicktime- you don't have to. Find the link that only does quicktime.

So, uninstall quicktime then try installing it again.  That should do it. Also, you can use other plugins- I have WinAmp (http://www.winamp.com) doing all my media playing and it seems to work fine.

Whacky -- 12/01/2004, 21:55:11 -- #9392
I've had the same problem with Firefox and midi files...I click to install the plugin, it says it installed, but it still wants me to install it every time I try to play a midi file.

I wonder why it won't use my default midi player (Windows Media Player)?  It says it's using the default player in the Tools>Options>Downloads>File Types list...hmmm...

prado -- 12/02/2004, 00:04:15 -- #9393

Scot's computer problem
Hi Folks,

I just lost all partitions on my Mactor Serial ATA 250 GB hard drive. This is my "work" drive with all data.  My latest DVD backup is corrupt as well and the most recent backup before that is from August which means as far as this system goes, those files are useless.

What does this mean for the site?  Nothing except that I can no longer update it since all the recent source files are gone (along with recent source files for my business stuff).

So luckily there are no huge bugs to fix.

I have one avenue left to me for self data recovery but it will take a piece of hardware so I'm not sure when I'll get it or it will come in if I have to order it.

The moral of the story is- Seagate  hard drives are good, new Maxtor ATA hard drives are bad.

Moral 2: backup on multiple DVD's (or CD's), not one rewritable.

Moral 3: keep source code in multiple places, such as have a mirror of it online somewhere.

This is really stressing me out so if I'm not around for a week or so, dont' take it personally, I just have to get a measely 2gb worth of data back or I'm in hot water in many different ways.

Moral 4: it's just a computer, life isn't over, and there's snow in the mountains for skiing.

Whacky -- 12/26/2004, 10:39:38 -- #9878
It's definitely time to go skiing...

I'm using Maxtors too...I'm getting nervous (Don't buy IBM either)  My old Seagates are still alive and kicking - too bad they are under 1.5 gigs:)

Gordon -- 01/05/2005, 06:49:05 -- #10126
Hi Scot, I'm probably telling you something you thought of immediately, but just in case: when we had a drive go bad at work, we used a program from http://www.recovermyfiles.com/ - we couldn't see a thing through windows or dos but this prog managed to recover almost everything.

Scot -- 01/05/2005, 13:29:52 -- #10136
I used some FBI recovery tools and got the files back I needed to except in the spots where the drive was physically damaged, and thos efiles were only some digi picture files that aren't really all that important.

Thanks for the tip, though!

"24 Way of Looking at a Piano" Available Now! (ooooh...)
Friends, loved ones, and people I've never met before,

I am thrilled to announce the official release of my debut CD, "24 Ways of Looking at a Piano", experimental music so good that I'm almost, but not quite, willing to offer a money back guarantee on each purchase. This CD is part of a new music craze unlikely to sweep the nation due to the esoteric nature of its contents, and is available at the two or three peculiar establishments that actually stock this sort of thing nearest you (if you live in New York City, Chicago or possibly San Fransisco). Otherwise it is readily available on the web at such fine establishments as:

Some Updates
Hi Folks,

Ok, keep an eye on the system for now. I've made a lot of big updates, many of them invisible, some of them visible.  If you see anything buggy, let me know ASAP.

I've implemented an archive system for old messages.  Eventually I will use Google to do a site search in the archive area, but for now there is just an index page with the name of each thread. It's not meant to be readable by humans, rather by search engine spiders, but take a look if you're curious.

I've  enhanced blogs, files, and polished up a few user interface things.  Fixed some bugs that you probably didn't know were there and basically spent a lot of time the last three weeks getting this udpate together.

Hope you enjoy it, and like I said, don't be shy if you encounter a bug!

Scot -- 12/12/2005, 14:09:40 -- #22103
Archives
The archives are now in full swing. The google site search has spidered the pages so EVERY thread we've had in here (in the "new" forums) is now accessible.

The old forums are not in the archive at this time, but I'll see about putting them in there at some point in time.

If you want to test it, click on "site search" (top right) and simply put the word "archive" in the search box, as a curiosity of course.

Out of town
I'll be out of town until March 28, completely off the grid, so if I don't respond to questions, it's not because I'm ignoring you (which is usually the case :) it's because I'm in the boonies trying to catch dinner or something.

Not sure where to post this...
Thought about "Gender Issues" or "The Brewery" but in the end this Room seems the least ambiguous place:

I got married last week.  You can read the story and see some pictures on the website:

http://www.spoonbillmusic.com

The event was jazz- and piano-free, but while you're visiting the site, why not register, check out some of the downloads and post some items or links of your own?

Sid, delightful, as was your write-up of the event (and the odd laws of your land -- funny, a couple of hundred years later and we're all still arguing about the topic over here).  A most hearty congratulations!  And what better room for said announcement??

Congrats Sid, what a giant step, a major event I would add ! So you've decided to become more than just friends, and you told her : just you you, just me ? that's great.
Whatever happens, avoid substitution, and keep the I concentrate on you your everyday obsession, because the I fall in love too easily she won't accept :) Best wishes to you.

Great news and lovely pics.  Congratulations, Sid.
Your tale reminds me of a friend who went to China to marry a Chinese lady.  He said that he had been married for at least ten minutes before he knew about it.

Archives
Hi Folks,

Many of you have noticed that messages are scrolling off the message base. That's because of how I designed the system.  An untended message base can cripple a server as it becomes bloated with posts, good and otherwise.

Well, all messages are archived here at LJP.  If you click on "site search" from the top menu, you can search not only current messages on LJP, but all old messages as well, thanks to Google.

Eventually I'll have archive links for each room to make it easier to see old messages, but for now if you want to find all the messages in a room if some are missing, go to the site search and put the room name in double quotes, such as, "Reharmonization 101"

Scot -- 05/17/2006, 16:59:54 -- #27272
LearnJazzPiano server switch
Hi folks,

Sometime in the next week or so LJP will be moving to a new host and server.

After this move it is entirely possible that bugs will crop up.  However the upside is that I'll be able to put some nifty new features into the system as time goes on, features that will increase speed, functionality, and smooth out a lot of rough edges.

Anyway, I'll make another announcement when the time comes.  I wanted to warn in advance at least once before the transfer happens.

On the transfer: we won't lose any data or have any downtime more than just a few seconds thanks to the magic of pre-switching DNS info. Don't ask me how it works, but it's pretty slick.

You can always contact me directly by going here and leaving a message:

Politics
Hi,

Most of you noticed that I put a big "VOTE NOW" message on the home page of this site.  It will be removed after the mid-term elections here in the US on Tuesday.  I simply feel it's very important to get that message out.  If we change our policy makers, we can once again be a respected republic instead of a shunned and hated empire.

I am embarassed about the actions of the US, but things can change for the better as long as everyone practices the rights our hard fought democracy has given us.

Jazz Piano Camp
Jazz Piano Camp (2 week camp)
June 24 – July 6

Now in its third year, the Jazz Piano has proven to be a challenging and magical experience for high school pianists. The world of jazz inspires students to find their individuality and express themselves using the musical tools they are given. At Jazz Piano Camp, every student’s ideas are valuable. Our outstanding faculty show students how to apply their technique and musical background to jazz improvisation, and we unlock the mysteries of harmony and creativity with advanced theoretical study. No prior experience in jazz is required for this camp, but qualities such as curiosity, courage, imagination, leadership, and hard work will spur your success here.

Jazz Piano Camp is led by Tara Buzash, jazz pianist, composer, and arranger in the New Jersey-Philadelphia area. (www.buzash.net).

Within the two weeks, students will learn:
•  to play one jazz standard tune on solo piano
•  to play a jazz standard as part of a trio with bass and drums
•  to read jazz charts
•  to improvise using scales, chord tones, and “color tones”
•  to play three songs “by ear,” reconstructing the music with authenticity
•  specific techniques for transposing, or playing songs in any key
•  to accompany a jazz vocalist
•  the significance of jazz music in history
•  and more!

Daily Schedule
The daily schedule includes Ear Training, Jazz Theory, Jazz History, Playing By Ear, Solo Lessons and Practice Time and Ensemble Master Classes (with faculty bassist and drummer)

Once each week, we will have a professional jazz vocalist come in for classes on Accompanying a Jazz Vocalist.

We will also schedule activities such as Princeton walking trips and a special Fourth of July celebration. We will celebrate what you have learned in a final recital on the last day of camp.

For some reason an old Gateway joke just popped into my mind.  Do you remember this one?

"Why did Berujomii cross the road?"

"To sacrifice the chicken."

I wasn't aware of that joke.  Do you allow the usage of dead chicken parts as components after a sacrifice???  The horror of the chicken death could add greatly in matters arcane.

Scot -- 12/31/2007, 18:02:19 -- #39354
How very troubling but true.  There are no rules as far as I know when it comes to chicken jokes or what happens to the chicken remains after the joke is finished, so I think it's up to each person's own interpretation.

I actually haven't played the game in years, I'm not insane anymore and never did believe I was my character(s).  The live game I played last I was actually neutral, not evil.

Take it easy, I was just making a joke.

Berujomii -- 01/01/2008, 18:41:27 -- #39373
I'm actually glad you have chosen not to allow inter-player deaths and killings, to what extent may I conduct the usual sacrifices if and when you do set up Edgekeep again?

Scot -- 01/04/2008, 15:45:05 -- #39425
It's a moot point at the moment, though on some level I'd enjoy what a bbs like gateway would have to offer, especially for the creative writing aspect of it, I don't anticipate having time to even set something up for a while.

Berujomii -- 01/04/2008, 16:32:00 -- #39428
An alternative is to start a regular live game with pencil and paper, I did one game for a year and doing 2 days a week took my level 1 wizard Arcanius, with no magic weapons or anything to start, up to 19th level in just a few months.  That way, instead of having to spend time every day on the game, we could schedule time for it.
