Hi,

I'm not exactly sure what you are asking.

I looked at that site you mentioned, but it looks like any other website.  As for as midi files are concerned, there are no midi files in this section yet.

Be more specific about what you mean by something simple and I will definitely try to accomodate you.

solution
I think emma is simply talking about notations that has nothin to do
with sight reading but maybe somethin like spellin out the chords e.g
C major = C G E
F MAJOR7 = C G E B
etc. that's all I think....

Any ideas about that recent Autumn Leaves upload?  It sounds pretty good, especially for a midi file.

Agreed!  Very nice piece of work.  Someone should take the credit.

Ok, I sent the person an email message asking about the midi file. Hope they will get back to me about it with some further information.

Sounds like it could be a transcription of some pro group doing it, or maybe a school project where the solos and stuff were sequenced?

Does anyone else hear strange electronic drum sounds in it?

sdm -- 05/16/2005, 20:39:10 -- #13884
There was something in the "standard" track at the beginning that I thought was corruption of some kind.  After the intro it's the cymbals although it does get to sounding electronic a couple of minutes in.  Everything else seems pretty clean.

Scot -- 05/21/2005, 11:53:25 -- #14049
As in the classical room, only upload pieces that you yourself performed/recorded.

Even though Autumn Leaves and the other one are cool, unless you are the performer, they should not be uploaded here.

I don't think anyone here knows the group you are asking about. In the future, feel free to leave ONE message with your question. Most of us look at all the new messages on the site, so leaving the same message in multiple places isn't going to  help.

Sheet music
Does anyone know where to find Free jazz sheet music ?

Scot -- 05/09/2006, 18:57:13 -- #27106
If you know what you want, it's important to buy it. If you don't, there are great collections out there by Hal Leanord publishing and others that have upwards a hundred nice solo jazz piano arrangements.

You can also go to your library- there are usually LOTS of great jazz piano resources in any medium-large sized library.

Don't forget Sheetmusic Magazine and Piano Today magazine.  Sometimes it pays to leave the computer and go to a library when looking for these kinds of things.

Hello! I heard wonderfull "variations" latin jazz piano solo on a latin theme called "La Negra Tomasa"....I am not sure if the interpret was Chucho Valdés. I would be very thankfull if anybody could give me a link where I could find the music sheet, arranged for piano solo.

Hi Pianogirl:
The real name of that tune (guaracha-mambo) is Bilongo.
You will find a nice arrangement in Latin Real book

I can't hear anything!!!!!!
This is my first time visiting this site.  I've recently been hired to play piano at an upscale department store...ok...Nordstroms.... however, I'd like to "spice up" my playing and add some fun to it...especially with the left hand.  I read music, but prefer to play by ear.  Any suggestions?

Me Playing "Tune Up"
I am still pretty new to Jazz piano, I am classically trained but started learning about Jazz here on this site.  My biggest challange is improvising.  I uploaded a file of me playing "Tune-up"  which is a fast be-bop.  I would like to know where I can improve on the solos.

Scot -- 10/31/2006, 10:41:44 -- #30844
Tune Up
Hi Bob,

I'm glad you're working on jazz piano, it's just going to get more fun as you progress.

I hear two areas you could put some time into.  First, you didn't play the melody very well.  When you're playing the melody, really play it, play it like you mean it. Don't noodle around with melody notes because it sounds like you're searching for the right note.

Ok, on soloing, there's more to it than playing the notes that fit into the chords.  You need to do more listening.  Jazz is a language and your playing is telling me that you're not doing enough listening.

If you listen to your playing and then listen to your favorite jazz pianist playing, maybe even the same tune, what are the differences?  Well, your time is a little off, but that comes with practice and you don't have a lot of experience yet.

Mostly your phrasing needs work and comes with knowing the jazz language which comes by listening more.  Also you're at the point where you can start transcribing tunes. How many jazz piano solos have you learned/transcribed from the recording?  This is the time to start doing that.

Hey, you're definitely on the right track, and you obviously have been working hard, so keep it up!

bobsmith -- 10/31/2006, 19:13:52 -- #30853
Tune UP
Thank You, Scott for the helpful tips.  You summed it up nicely when you mentioned that I need to do more listening.  As a classical piano player, I learned how to read sheet music and know enough about music theory to give me the knowledge, but puting it into practice and applying it is a real challenge.

I think I got the LH rootless comping down pretty good, but when I try to solo, my right hand just turns to jello.  It's like when you try to run underwater and you just can't go very fast-that's what it is like with my right hand when I try to solo.  Funny thing is that I can play many fast classical songs that I memorize, but if I try to improvise, my hand doesn't know what to do.

Do you suggest that I memorize solo performances and play along with the recordings?  I have never memorized/transcribed someone else's  solo before, so I am not sure how to approach it.

sdm -- 11/01/2006, 09:59:08 -- #30866
I'll speak to transcription as a beginner.  First, it's not easy.  I actually started with a solo someone else transcribed that you can get here at ljp.  I believe it's in the transcription room -- it is Wynton Kelly's solo on Freddy The Freeloader.  I use an MP3 player that let's me slow things to 75% or 50% speeds and allows for a bookmark that let's me go back over (and over, and over, and over) the same section.

To begin, listen until you can sing or hum the tune of whatever you're trying to get.  Don't worry too much about the harmony yet, just try for the line.  I hear some people can do the chords but that’s still beyond me.  It is important to know what the harmony is however so get a lead sheet (chords and melody) of what you want to work on.

Then just start picking notes and lines.  For me it’s a very slow process.  Right now I’m working on 24 bars that my teacher recorded for me on C blues.  This happens to be on a simple cassette recorder so no slow-down.

It’s work but it seems to pay off and almost everyone that can play recommends it.

Scot -- 11/01/2006, 18:02:43 -- #30879
Look in my post in the main forum.  One of the things you must do to give your right hand any chance of success at all is to play your tune very very slowly. Put your metronome on 60 and play eighth note solos.  As time goes on the stuff you practice slowly will come out in your playing, depending on how much slow practice effort you put in. If you just practice fast, it's going to take a lot longer to get going.
