| hmm?? | |
| I don't know Rick...I've always been the kind of guy who deals with what hits me in the face as I go down the road...perhaps I'm not worthy of my own room! I could certainly tell someone how to make a living playing weddings and Bar Mitzvahs! | |

| Lol :-) I could make my own room but i dought that much would happen in there! Ive been meaning for the last 3 months to get round to finding a computer with a scanner and uploading some transcriptions and lead sheets ive made...someday...I will do it, i promise! Do u have any new mp3s of yourself that we can listen to? Im doing a new album soon with my trio, so if it goes well I can put it on here....no dought tho that that will take me a few years to get round to... | |
| Whacky -- 01/30/2004, 17:31:23 -- #1075512683 | |
| The only thing worth converting to mp3 was an easy listening jazz standard CD I did a couple of years ago...and I sang on it - yuck! The problem is that it belongs to a record company who basically paid me to do it...I'm very grateful so I don't feel right tossing around mp3s of it...It's not a "go for it" kind of thing anyway... there is an mp3 sample demo of that CD posted on Superlux's Website, but it's about 8 or nine tunes all bunched together, sans solos...with the exeption of a lot of out of time notes I spat out on "I'll Remember April"...you can check that out if you wish - wait a minute...didn't you already give me shit about my beard? :) Hey please let me know when your stuff is finished...I wanna get it! | |

| first of all, thanks to all of you for your contribution to a great site I recommend to all of my students! "ur" is btw used in viennese dialect exactly in the way 7 described (is he/she viennese?). | i need HELP!!!! PLEASE SOMEBODY!! I can't read music i play only by ear,but i want to learn jazz soooo badly!! | |
| Scot -- 10/29/2004, 00:01:39 -- #8421 | |
| You need to take some piano lessons so you can read music. It's very important to learn how to read music, and it's not very difficult to learn. Then, buy the Jazz Piano book by Mark Levine (visit your local music store or click on the "search books" link at the top right) and read it- go through each chapter and study. It will take you six months or so to do it. When you are through with the Jazz Piano book, you will have a lot of great jazz paino knowledge. Also- listen to a lot of jazz records and try to play the same stuff that the piano players you are listening to are playing. That's how you learn jazz. | |

| Thank you! I'd like to hear you play sometime:) Better yet, it would be fun to play with you:) Not too much Salsa around here:( - it's probably my all time favorite music. I still have this idea of getting this LJP community together somewhere, sometime. A convention. We could all where silly hats, and play for and with each other. Maybe even hire a Bass player and drummer? | |

| Good idea; Wacky, to do a jam session with all LJP partners. I have something in common with you: I’m the organist or all synagogues here in Bogota. I’m not Jewish, but i play all kind of Israeli, Sephardic, Hassidic and liturgical music. | |

| In what states do you teach and do you also teach classical music along with jazz? | |
| Whacky -- 07/08/2005, 10:49:24 -- #16289 | |
| I teach piano in St. Louis. To me, music is music, whether it's jazz or classical, baroque, whatever... My background is mostly in pop and jazz, but my college studies where "classical". It is in those studies that I learned the most about how to play the piano. | |

| Dear whacky I see where you mentioned you were a teacher. What help could you give an amateur pianist who can play the head of any tune and needs help improvising. I am happy with the sounds I get but have been on the brink of improvisation for some time I live on Long island thx charlie | |

| Well not having heard you I don't really know where to start. The main things to do are listening and experimenting. I know that sounds like an over simplification, but in my opinion that really is the core of improvisation development. You must have ideas in your head (you get those from listening) and you must be able to play them on the piano (you get that from experimenting) If you want to play jazz, you must listen to jazz...just as people who listen to country play and sing it authentically. Also, Scot got a great tip about getting out to experience life - very important! You can read all the books if you want, but it's important to remember that the books came after the music. It makes sense to me to listen to it and live it a bit before you read about it. The other very important thing to do is play - and with other people. Try to find some other players to just "jam" with...I used to play two-chord jams for hours when I was a kid. Hanging around here won't hurt you either...There is a plethera of shared tips and experiences here! Good Luck! Good luck | |

| Hi DrW! I live in Pocahontas Ar(240m S on Hwy67), & wondered if there are scheduled events for beginners in jazz/blues piano to meet & jam together w/other musicians? Maybe what I'm asking--do professionals host/sponsor/participate in learning activities that include group playing opportunities in the StL area? Thanks! Fred | |

| Sounds like you may be talking about jazz camps? Yes, they usually happen in the summer at surrounding universities and local colleges. Also there are a couple "School of Rock" type programs popping up at local music stores. I'm not sure if any of these warrant a 240 mile drive, but if you don't have anything there in Ar. maybe they do:) | |

| Open right hand voicings | |
| Hi Dr. Whacky: Greetings from O.P. Kas. Some time ago you gave me advise on adjacent note voicings. Thanks. Now having attained the age of 80, I started to take jazz piano lessons again. This tells you I am nuts. My former teacher taught me to use open voicings as much as possible, depending on lead melody note. On my second lesson with new teacher, he told me to never double 3 or 7s as it gives a "strident sound" and was a basic rule of music and a no no. This is no big deal as I try to do what the teacher says, but the sound sounds O K to my tin ear and I understand that all "rules" of music does not always apply to jazz. My original teacher patterned his lessons from Herb Drury, of St. Lo.I would be interested in your opinion.Incidently, I have a grand daughter and two great grandsons that live in St.Lo. area. Best regards, Wild Bill Duffy. | |
| 7 -- 07/22/2006, 22:37:50 -- #28899 | |
| The business of not doubling a 3rd or b7th follows the general rule that "Tension notes should not be doubled". A b7 is not a tension note in a m7 chord so it can double freely, but any note that is one of a tritone interval should not be doubled. Consequently, neither the b3rd or the 6th of a m6 chord should be doubled. However, those are just general guidelines and are often ignored (especially in Jazz). | |

| My best lesson | |
| I thought it might be nice to share with everyone the aboslute best piano lesson I ever got. I was studying classical piano in college with a lady named Jane Allen. At the time I was playing shows at Six Flags and playing many other gigs with various jazz and pop groups. I felt like a fish out of water in the classical world - in other words I was intimidated. I felt as if "classical" musicians knew something I did not. Since I was playing so many gigs and trying to keep up with my homework, (my gigs were paying for my schooling) ,I was barely keeping up with Jane's lessons. I was scooting along doing the bare minimum. I don't remember what pieces I was working on at the time but I remember there were three of them and it took about 20 minutes to perform the three. We started the lesson by my playing all three pieces. When I finished she said, "just a minute" and walked across the room to start a reel to reel tape recorder. She then said,"play them again". So I did. After I finished, she walked accross the room, saying nothing, and played back the recording. When the recording was finished playing she just looked at me and said, "okay?" I was shocked and sickened by what I heard. I had no idea how badly I was playing. However, by forcing me to listen to myself, she gave back to me the power to be the musician I am. I know what music sounds like, and what I heard was not music, but sloppy noise. Could I refine it having heard what I had heard? You bet. That's what practicing is all about. Will I ever be finished? Nope, that's what music is all about:) | |

| you mean Manhattan here in the US? If you ever make it to St. Louis area - we have to hook up!! The dog training has always been a hobby - My dad brought home a German Shepherd trained (and rejected) by the police force when I was two - the dog and I were the same age. I became fascinated by him, his training and his intuition. After some 45 years of owning and training dogs I find myself the proud owner of two rescued dogs (one a pure bread German Shepherd the other a border collie mix) with some behavioral issues. I am intrigued by the challenge. I'm haven't been playing much so I avoid recording:) My son however is really getting into it - playing guitar, piano, singing, writing and recording his own stuff. (in his bedroom with Cubase) I'm more interested in his career than mine :) I actually have a trio gig this evening - I'm kinda rusty though - afraid the synapses might not fire they way they used to! | |
| Rick -- 05/12/2007, 04:04:47 -- #34996 | |
| yeah, the Manhattan School of Music, I think Kenny Barron teaches there. A friend of mine went a couple of years ago and said it was a complete roast, with lots of odd time signatures and stuff, so I'm probably going to wait a few years before trying. That's great about your son, that must be so rewarding to see. I'm not too clued up about dog training myself, but I imagine that it must be a good challenge to try and make a naughty dog behave lol. I hope the gig went well! Trio gigs are the best =) | |

| well my good Doctor I know you are conducting your own private study of the matter that was taken up in the lounge recently so i thought you might be interested to know the following: 1. I once had a teacher who said he only had Perfect Bitches on the Piano. Now what exactly he meant by that who can be sure. 2. I was reading somewhere else tonight that uses the term Absolute Bitch I was like "woa" somehow that scared me even more than "perfect bitch" Somehow I wanna stay clear of both of em unles I can safely tie em down. I remain for my myself and for my students an advocste of the relative Bitch | |
