| Anyone know who he is? | |
| I just got back from watching Alan Skidmore, saxophonist with a support group from the North West of England with an absolutely wonderful pianist (as well as other instrumentalists). Does anyone know who he is? I have to say that the place was packed and I couldn't get in to see, so we went to the pub and came back later when we could watch the last few numbers. The gig was at http://www.alexanders.co.uk (or may be .com). The saxophonist and the pianist just jelled through Mr PC . I want to know who he is so I can go see him again. | |

| Im pretty sure its Steve Melling- good player | |
| Kai -- 02/20/2004, 12:56:05 -- #1431 | |
| Thanks | |
| Thanks Rick - I'll have to find some of his stuff to listen to - Mr PC for example. He kept his head well down when I saw him play to the extent that he looked uncomfortable but the playing was great. | |
| Kai -- 02/21/2004, 09:08:21 -- #1471 | |
| Not Steve Melling | |
| Rick, I found a photograph of Steve Melling and it's not him but thanks anyway. I have my scouts out .... | |
| Rick -- 02/22/2004, 03:57:03 -- #1503 | |
| Ah well, I was gonna say, was he quite small and...pudgy...but I didnt dare. I always thought it was him, Im pretty sure I saw a Skidmore advert stating that Melling was doing piano. Was it the percussion based band? I'll have to see if I can find out who it was. Was he really young? It might have been Gwyillam. | |

| Alan Skidmore pianist | |
| Yes, it was. Well, as I said, 'cos the place was absolutely full to the brink, we went over to the pub and came back later. So I only saw the group for about 3/4 numbers. The pianist, didn't look as though he had reached 30 years but had greying hair. He kept his head down (when I saw him play) but when he did show his face, it was thin with a turned up nose. The young group also included a youngish drummer and a very young and very good bassist (he looked about 19 years). I've searched the internet and requested info from my musical friends but no luck yet. However, I'm going to Alexanders again on Wednesday this week, to their jazz jam night - I hope some of the band/instrumentalists/the owner will know who he is. I'll post here if I find out. Due to Chester Jazz Festival and sponsorship by the North West Arts Board, Alexanders is able to put on free jazz nights on Thursdays during February and it's been great so far - Stevie Williams this Thursday. Also worth going to see is Gilad Atzmon on 1st April - not free though (£12) but excellent. This is daft - but he looked like a Gwylliam !!! | |

| Rick -- 02/23/2004, 02:48:45 -- #1548 | |
| Gwilym Simcock is 21. If he sat in a really classical manner (very ver straight lol) at the piano then it could be him, Im not sure about the greying hair bit tho- there are pictures of him on google if you search for him. He's a monster player but I dont like him personally as he slagged off my teacher Nikki!!! Grrr Im gonna have a look and see if I can get anywhere with finding out who these guys were Kai! | |

| pianist | |
| The man in question is, I am told, Richard Wetherall from the Manchester area. | |
| Rick -- 02/26/2004, 07:37:10 -- #1727 | |
| Ahh ok...never heard of him then! | |
| Kai -- 02/26/2004, 15:18:34 -- #1745 | |
| Richard Wetherall | |
| I'm sure he'll soon be well known. Saw Steve Williams (bass guitar) band tonight at the free Jazz Festival gig in Chester. The Festival has been great and well attended. So many YOUNG jazz players - fantastic. | |
| Rick -- 02/27/2004, 02:47:54 -- #1760 | |
| Nice, who else was on that one? | |
| Kai -- 02/27/2004, 06:12:43 -- #1772 | |
| Again I couldn't hear all the names but they were all great individually and collectively - really listened to one another and I have no idea how the pianist kept up with the saxophonist iprovisation. It almost sounded note-for-note at times but how could that be? Stevie Williams band and he was bass guitarist. I've not been to see a band led so well and 'unnoticeably' by a bassist before and his playing was so sympathetic to all rhythms and all soloists. Bongo drums - excellent, drums - good, keyboardist excellent, trumpet player - young, fresh from school look - amazing and Simon Willescroft on sax - amazing and played with Jamie Cullum. The bass guitar and keyboard used their 'gismo's' very appropriately and sympathetically. Trumpet and sax call and response - I'm stuck for words now - very tuned to one another. I'll shut up now. I'll definitely go and see them again. Oops just found this: Stevie Williams : bass (Dawson's Music is proud to sponsor Stevie Williams) Andy Kingslow : keys Eryl Roberts : drums Chris Mannis : percussion also featuring: Simon Willescroft ~ sax (Jamie Cullum, Katie Melua) Graham Flowers ~ trumpet (The James Taylor Quartet) Info: www.steviewilliams.co.uk | |

| Re- Richard Weatherall | |
| I've seen him loads of times around the Manchester area. He's a very interesting player. Plays a lot with Richard Iles' group. (He was on the first Jazz course I ever went on in 1990!!!) My guess is that the bass player might have been Peter Turner who's also very good. The Alexander's list has been updated so doesn't show up the 20th Feb anymore. | |

| Re Gwilym | |
| Saw Gwilym with Acoustic Triangle a couple of weeks back. A monster player in the making (if not already). I've seen him on French Horn too with Kenny Wheeler's band and NYJO some time ago.Had a quick chat with him after the gig. Seemed a nice enough bloke. Must have said summat to upset Rick though ??? | |
| Rick -- 03/01/2004, 07:49:25 -- #1947 | |

| Still around and thank you all | |
| Just wanted to say that I’m still around and greatly enjoying my music. When I first found this site I was like a ‘kid in a sweet shop’ and I learned a lot, first by ‘lurking’ and than by asking (probably daft) questions and getting courteous and very apt responses. Now, I’m off doing lots of practice, listening, reading, playing, singing and it’s keeping me very busy – the house is a tip :). However, I still lurk most days and still pick up lots of useful information. It is a good feeling to watch other folk find the site and go through the same discovery. It is a good resource for musicians who really want to learn. It’s a bit like attending the local jam session and watching people tentatively join in and, over time, really improve. You feel that you’ve been part of the success. | |

| Richard Wetherall | |
| Kai, I don't know if you're around the Alrincham area but Richard Wetherall's playing the Wheatsheaf hotel there a couple of times in June: http://www.getintojazz.com/scripts/giglist.asp# | |

| Thanks | |
| Thanks, Gordon. I am in Chester - not too far away - and will try to get to the Wheatsheaf Hotel on one of the nights. However, I am in the process of moving house during this time and I'm finding this a bit scary. | |
| johnq -- 06/03/2004, 01:23:20 -- #4752 | |
| Hey Kai, I've got a gig in Chester in a few weeks at Alexander's with the Manchester Jazztet (16th June). I was there a couple of Sundays back with them too. I've been there in the past to see people such as Stan Tracey but it was good to perform there. | |

| Away for a while | |
| I'll be missing for a while after this week. I'm due to have a week away (Jazz Course 1 - 6 August), then I'm moving house and also I'll be changing computers. I'll miss all the advice, for which many thanks again. Perhaps I'll find a friendly internet cafe but if not, I'll catch up l8tr. Kai | |

| Aebersold | |
| The UK Aebersold course was really really useful and enjoyable. It was my one and only ever jazz course, tho' so I've nothing to compare it with. The colleague that I went to the course with has been to many of these such courses in the uk and was also very impressed with the detail to be learned there. I was selected (auditioned by Dan Haerle) for the second from bottom group in the combo classes and following the theory test I was selected for the second from top level for theory - this, to me, seemed very apt for my skill levels in those areas. Every morning 9 to 10.30 we had theory drummed into our heads courtesy of Mike Tracy (excellent educator) and we grabbed coffee with 'brain ache'. This was followed by combo classes (these were not quite so successful this year due to the group make-up apparently) but these did prove to be very useful in a number of ways for me personally. The material covered in the master classes tied in with the combo class and was useful for voicing selection and other things. I'd say, overall that I now understand a lot more and have things to work on (that I had planned in any case) for a year or two and that the course was worth every £ spent on it. I and my colleague would recommend it. My new laptop is not up and running but I need time to get to know it, especially the stuff on the audio drive. I've sold my house and moved in with my son while my new apartment is being finished. It shouldn't be too long now before I'm settled again and hopefuly life (as I like it) can get back to normal. My son has a small house with no room for a piano or music station (My Mo is in store :( for now. However, my son is a Star Wars Galaxy fan and so has ADSL. One can't have everything and at least I have a roof over my head for the next week or two and I can look forward to a winter of playing and learning more jazz. Thanks for the interest. Kai Kai | |
