What Child is This?
What is a good base line to this tune?

This is the wrong room for this kind of question.  There are two lesson rooms dealing with issues like these.  Click on 'show list' next to 'Rooms' in the left hand menu and look for 'that left hand' and 'walking bass'.

General questions should be posted in the Piano Lounge.

Thank you Barry.  Come on people:  Quit junkin' up the threads.

Secondary-Dominant STARTER info please?

What, please (in basic definition), is a secondary dominant and to what most-basic progression type or place withIN a progression does it fit?

Is it a progression-specific item, chord-specific item, or a transitional item?

Tks,
Jiggy

A primary dominant is the V of the parent tonic.

A secondary dominant contains note(s) outside the parent tonic, and acts as the dominant to the dominant.

Ex:

Primary Dominant resolving to Tonic chord
V7 -] I
G7 -] C

Secondary Dominant resolving to the Primary Dominant resolving to Tonic chord
V7/V -] V7 -] I
D7   -] G7 -] I

Many tunes in the Ragtime / Dixieland / Honky Tonk genres use long strings of Secondary Dominants.

Ex: "Five Foot Two Eyes of Blue"
| C | E7       | A7     | A7     | D7   | G7 | C | G7 |
| I | V7/V/V/V | V7/V/V | V7/V/V | V7/V | V7 | I | V7 |

That's all there is to it.
