| Stride Piano | |
| The father of Stride Piano is indisputably James P. Johnson. This style is deeply rooted in the piano conventions of Ragtime as typified by Scott Joplin and the original New Orleans Jazz of Jelly Roll Morton. James P. Johnson's flamboyant style heavily influenced most major Swing era players. Basie and Ellington were raised on Stride and many elements of Stride are easily heard in their respective piano work. Thelonious Monk was brought up on Stride as well and was an excellent Stride player. Most, however, associate Stride Piano with two of the greatest pianists that ever lived - Fats Waller and Art Tatum. While Fats had a never ending bag of tricks up his sleeve, Art Tatum turned the world upside-down. | |

| James P. Johnson - "The Father of Stride" | |
| A great number of James P. Johnson's best known works are available for free as midi files on John Farrell's site. Some of them are actual piano roll to midi conversions (meaning that it's really James P. Johnson playing), other midi files are performed by John Farrell. http://homepages.tesco.net/~stridepiano/midifiles.htm James P. Johnson's style of piano is an evolution of the Ragtime idiom. While his works contain many innovative techniques and treatments of progressions, you will hear that one of his main objectives was virtuoso "tricky licks". This emphasis on "trickiness" is the root of what was soon after called the "Novelty" genre (epitomized by tunes such as "Kitten on the Keys" and "Nola"), and also formed the basis for what is now known as "Honky Tonk Piano". | Fats Waller's version of Carolina Shout transcribed or MIDI | |
| I've always had a weakness for the recording of Carolina Shout by Waller (even though it was Johnson's song and trademark). Any chance there's a MIDI transcription of Fats Waller's version of Carolina Shout? Thanks! | |

| I couldn't find a midi of the Fats Waller "Carolina Shout", but look at what I DID find! http://www.primeshop.com/midlist3.htm http://members.aol.com/midimusic/stride.html | |

| Schwartz's "Carolina Shout" & "Handful of Keys" midi seq | |
| I was nosing around Irwin Schwartz's page http://members.aol.com/midimusic/stride.html and found that his excellent sequences are done on TWO tracks (RH & LH) so opening them up in a notation program makes them really easy to tidy up and get great sheet music! John Farell's arrangement of "Carolina Shout" (uploaded to this room 3/11/2005) is only on one track and maddeningly difficult to separate into two staves (actually impossible for my software). In addition Mr Farrell's arrangement of "Carolina Shout" is sort of simplified (it's not simple - but it's simpler than the Irwin Schwartz sequences). So I tidied up the notation for the midi files of both Mr Schwartz's sequences "Carolina Shout" and "Handful of Keys" and turned them into .pdf files for you (ain't I nice?). Along with the free VanBasco midi player with its virtual keyboard and its tempo change function (available FREE at http://www.VanBasco.com ) anyone interested in learning these masterpieces of Stride piano can now do so with the minimum amount of pain. Have fun with these tunes (just click on list files above). Hats off and THANKS to Irwin Schwartz (wherever you are) for these fantastic authentic sequences! | |
| 7 -- 01/15/2006, 22:43:31 -- #23146 | |
| I guess the PDF files are too big for me to upload, but that's allright I'll make sure they show up here soon. Be patient. | |

| PDFs of "Carolina Shout" & "Handful of Keys" | |
| The PDFs of "Carolina Shout" & "Handful of Keys" here are direct notation of the midi files of the same name (the Irwin Schwartz versions). According to Mr Schwartz, these are the real deal. When I opened the abovementioned midi files in my notation software these beautiful (and extremely important) historical masterpieces' secrets were laid bare. However, I chose a relatively high quantization resolution. As a consequence these scores are not RHYTHMICALLY exact reproductions of that which is being played in the respective midi files. For this reason, I recommend that these PDF scores ONLY be used in conjunction with the midi files. If you open the midi files in the VanBasco player (FREE at http://www.vanbasco.com ) you can see the pieces being played on the virtual piano keyboard. The VanBasco player comes with tempo change capabilities, so slow the piece down and using your eyes and ears follow along. Should you have any questions as to exactly what notes are being played, refer to your PDF printout. Why, you might ask, did I choose the lower resolution for the PDF files? Simply to make them more easily readable. The compromise is that some of the rhythmic nuances have been lost BUT ALL THE NOTES ARE THERE! Historically these pieces have been mandatory for every true Jazz pianist to be familiar with. And so, in the interests of perpetuating interest in Stride piano and insuring that YOUR Jazz Piano education is complete, I have taken the time to make these materials available to the Jazz Piano community in the very most accessible and digestible of formats - midi audio with visual virtual piano (courtesy of VanBasco) coupled with a printable score (courtesy of me). And once again on behalf of all that will take the time to benefit from these files - THANK YOU IRWIN SCHWARTZ FOR SUCH EXCELLENT PERFORMANCES OF THESE STRIDE CLASSICS!!! | |
