| Brazilian Pianists | |
| Can anyone recomend any good Brazilian pianists to listen to? I dig on Helio Alves and Cliff Korman (I think is his name) but I haven't heard too many. Thanks for any input. | |

| Eliane ELIAS is nice to hear, she is a good jazz/brazilian piano player. Her two last albums : dreamer and kissed by nature. Both are cool. Enjoy them. | |

| Tania Maria is another one--she's awesome. and Joanne Brackeen has an album called "Breath of Brazil" which has a great version of Aguas de Marco(Waters of March) on it. Eddie Gomez and one of my favorite Brazilian drummers--Duduka Da Fonseca is on that album. George Duke has a nice CD called I think "A Brazilian Love Affair" with a couple of really nice tunes on it with Flora Purim, but what really steals the show is an awesome take of Cravo y Canela--a samba in 3, which just swings its ass off--in a Brazilian samba way of course. Check out some stuff by either Airto or his wife Flora Purim and also their band--Fourth World. and how about some of the old Return to Forever stuff with Chick Corea, Airto, Flora and Stanley Clarke! Also and they aren't necessarily pianists, but check out: Stan Getz with Jobim, Lee Konitz--Brazilian Rhapsody, Astrud Gilberto, Claudio Roditi(one of those guys who can play anything-salso, Brazilian and jazz) Samba Manhattan Style, Trio da Paz (with Duduka), and Sergio Mendez and Humberto Pascaol(?spelling). Piano is not really a traditional brazilian instrument--I mean not like the guitar. So, search for stuff that is a little more modern like the Chick Corea RTF stuff and the Roditi album. Trio da Paz is a guitar trio with bass and drums. If you want to go old school check out some of the Escolas de Samba (Samba Schools) playing Samba Enredo. this is the Carnival style samba that may have hundreds of drummers in the ensemble. Good luck -J | |

| You may also want to check out Manfredo Fest and there is a sampler from Concord records in The Colors of Latin Jazz series called Samba which is a nice compilation. -J | |

| Hello--lo--lo--lo--lo. Anybody here. ere--ere--ere--ere. (echo) There is also 2 Compact Jazz CDs that are really good. They gave me alot of ideas for bossas to work on. One is Astrud Gilberto and the other is just called the Best of Bossa Nova. Jorge Ben is another guy to check out. He combined Brazilian and pop--there is this tune of his called, "Take it easy my brother charles"--man, if you don't tap your foot and smile to that tune, you better check yourself into the hospital because there's something wrong with ya. Also, check out the Caribbean Jazz Project--the 1st line up was Dave Samuels, Paquito D'Rivera and Andy Narell, but I think that has changed now and Dave Valentin is in the mix. Good stuff with a heavy jazz influence. -J | |

| João Donato, o cara (the man!!!!) | |
| If you want to learn a lot of things about brazilian music, listen to Joao Donato...he is one of the most creative piano players of Brazil in the popular area...He created a lot of rhytm patterns, a thing which even Tom Jobim has not done... I think you will enjoy João Donato | |

Djavan is a singer/composer who makes a perfect balance between brazilian music, pop and jazz. NANA VASCONCELOSis a great percussionist. All of the above, cross the thin line between jazz, folklore and world music. You should listen to the following singers/composers, too. | I've played Curumim by CESAR CAMARGO MARIANO- it's fabulous and very exciting. He now has some pieces available on his website. Anyone tried them out? I also like Brasileirinho by W. azevedo. A classic! Also, don't forget very old school Nazareth for some great rhythms like Odeon. | |
