Thats how I want to play.
any ideals no make me sound like oscar please.

Scot -- 07/23/2007, 19:13:59 -- #36029
Very easy- listen to what he plays and then play it exactly like him.  It might take a while, but that's how you do it.

Get the Oscar transcription book and cd!

jjboogiejj -- 08/27/2007, 16:39:59 -- #36595
its simple
get the transcription book and cd, and then experiment by taking some of his signature licks and intertwining them into your own music

Scot -- 09/20/2007, 12:17:47 -- #37172
That's what I did. I have the Canadian Suite book, got it when I was around 18, and played through a lot of the stuff in it. Learned Place St. Henri, Hogtown Blues, and a couple others.  Just full of OP licks, wonderful stuff that can EASILY be used in your own playing.

It's a message board, not a chat room.  Post your questions and there are numerous helpful types here (pros and otherwise) who will take shots at answers.  In general, work through the lessons here.  They are excellent.  Then, hang out in the piano lounge and soak up more advanced knowledge.

My favorite and so wish I could hear him live.
Has anyone heard Oscar Peterson live? What I would give. I can play jazz piano, from music but would love to sit and improv, I can with a fake sheet but not just out of my head. I am retired and loving the study of piano again. Keeps my mind in better condition. Now I am playing comp music by music and wanting help to do this myself without music.Sandy  B

I had the pleasure of hearing Oscar play solo in the late 70s in a room of about 300 people (or should I say pianists).  His plane was late so he was about 45 minutes late in starting the concert.  No one cared. We all waited patiently.  He walked in with no warmup, handkerchief  in hand, sat down and just played beautifully wiping his brow with his LH once in a while as his RH would wiz through some of his  marvelous signature runs.  A night to remember for sure

THE JAZZPIANIST I LIKE IS HAMPTON HAWES WHO DIED IN 1977 AGE 49.      I can find his work still,  worth the search...... basic stuff, no frumpery, highest skill, self taught, good tunes.
