LearnJazzPiano.com archives: why be original
kennyG -- 01/07/2005, 01:06:19 -- #10180
when you can just copy other people?

Scot -- 01/09/2005, 23:31:44 -- #10252
It's up to your personal preference. I try to be original because it keeps me interested in the music I'm playing, the words I'm writing, and the things I do in general.  Some people love copying what others have already done and that's what they live for.

It's really totally up to how you approach the world.

Dr. Whack -- 01/10/2005, 00:48:16 -- #10260
after a while copying can get quite boring...and besides, why strive to play like Oscar or Bill, etc? - we already have an Oscar, Bill etc...

I have never found a copy-cat to be interesting.  I think it's because they are too rehearsed...The  music that's original and spontaneous created simply stands out:)

marksdg -- 01/11/2005, 10:57:52 -- #10293
There is a difference between being original and spontaneous creation.  Originality comes from doing something other people aren't doing.  Spontaneous creation is improvising, which can sound original or can sound a lot like another player.

I am really not familiar with Kenny G's music, but for those who think he is not original, can you identify which other players he sounds like?  If your only criticism is that his music is harmonically simple, I don't think that is really a very  valid basis for bashing someone.  There is plenty of excellent music in the world that is harmonically simple.  If your critiscism is that he is not really playing jazz, has he ever really claimed that his music is 'jazz'.

Yeah, I am inclined to agree with marksdg.  I have don't listen to Kenny G's music, but that doesn't mean I hate him as a person. The stuff I've heard definately isn't jazz, but I think that is the fault of the people who label the music - not the people making it.

I say let guy be.

How did we get to talking about Kenny G?

marksdg -- 01/11/2005, 18:22:00 -- #10306
You know, I looked at the original message and somehow thought KennyG was part of the text, not someone's name.  Looking at it now, this makes no sense.

I was also thinking of a post someone had done earlier that mentioned Kenny G, and somehow constructed a response to a post that didn't exist.

You probably have tiny aliens living in your nose or something whispering to your brain what your fingers should type.

marksdg -- 01/12/2005, 18:52:44 -- #10319
Yes, Scot, they are the same ones who tell me what notes to play.

kenny G sucks

ElevatorGod -- 01/14/2005, 00:28:03 -- #10368
Yet, he's a celebrity while you're a nobody. Kenny G, while not the greatest musician on the planet, is still a household name with a large fan base worldwide. What about you, Mike or whatever? Just another anonymous loser on a message board. Keep playing your music for yourself while bashing other artists who actually made it, whether you like their music or not. People wouldn't even buy your music to play it in elevators.

Jazz+ -- 01/14/2005, 02:09:35 -- #10372
Footnote: the famous Kenny G has sold more records than any other instrumentalist in history.

Mike -- 01/14/2005, 04:49:50 -- #10374
BOWEL movenent are household words too.  Smegma, although a little more obscure is also a household word.  I'll take my obscurity, yes.

Am I missing something. Who IS Kenny G?
Try this for originality -

Gilad Atzmon and The Orient House Ensemble
Tonight - Friday 14th January - at 11.30pm on BBC Radio 3. (UK radio/time)

It's a much requested concert tonight held  over from the London Jazz Festival: outspoken saxophonist Gilad Atzmon.

See description at http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/jazzon3/pip/kbe6a/

I'd be interested in the response(s), especially from my esteemed experts on this site.

I'm going to be forced to remove accounts if messages like "mike sucks" are posted anymore. I don't mind humorous discussion and snappy comebacks, but just plain stupid and insulting doesn't go very far with me.

How about if we use secret code to insult our most hated record-sellers?

Would that be OK?
