| Feeling Diminished Hi Diminished chords sound so easy to play, apparently there are only 3 (or is it 4?) possible diminished chords to learn (hooray!!!) So why am I so scared of seeing a diminished chord in a lead sheet, seemingly waiting there to derail my playing? Can any one provide a few tips for playing diminished chords? There must be a few SIMPLE RULES to help make a smooth change to a diminished chord. Specific situations I have in mind are: - often the diminished chord is a chromatic movement, leading from or to another diatonic chord. - Diminished chords often feature in progressions that substitute for a ii-V-I progression. The diminished chords spoil the nice voice leading I employ in a ii-V-I. There seem to be a number of familiar shapes that crop up when I play diminished chords and I’ll think, I’ve seen that shape before….. Lookin’ forward to replies on this one. Bro’ | |

| To clarify a bit...there are only three diminished 7th chords (enharmonically), but there are 12 diminshed triads (enharmonically) Albetan's pdf file shows diminished 7th chords... You may notice that there are dimished triads within larger chords. For example in a G7 you will find a Bo triad, which is why those two chords function in the same way (both have a leading tone & the interval of a tritone) Likeswise you can find diminshed 7th chords in larger chords. For exmple in G7b9 you will find a Bo7. These findings are very useful when trying form "rootless vocings" For example, to voice a G7b9, you may want to use a Bo7...etc... Hopefully I haven't muddied this up for you:) | |

| Thank you Albetan and Dr Whack Very helpful information. And yes I have noticed that there are diminished triads within larger chords - although I only noticed this a couple of days ago for the first time! I am feeling less diminished now! Bro' | |
