Hey,
I am new to this website, and was wondering if anyone knew anything about learning to play like honky tonk/gospel type music on the piano? I have played piano for about 9 years, but I have only been a classical player and I would like to get started on jazz, but I am not really sure how. Thanks a lot!

I am not sure about Honky Tonk, but as far as Gospel goes there are many books out there.  In terms of what you can find on this site, listen to Scot's renditions of Amazing Grace and Hymn to Freedom.  Look under Rooms->Midi and Sheetmusic->Old Site Midi Files and then select 'List Files' near the top of the screen.

The best thing you can do is find some piano players you want to emulate and get their recordings.  Does anyone have a recommendation for CDs that show off gospel  piano playing?

Honky Tonk is closely related to Ragtime and early Stride with a heaping helping of Boogie Woogie clichés and popular Tin Pan Alley tunes.

Typically you have vertical style soloing (the tricks are generally dericed directly from the current underlying chord).

Guys like Frankie Carr epitomized the Honky Tonk style of piano.

Honky Tonk piano stylings are still to be found sprinkled liberally throughout Country and Western.
