| Hi there! I’m trying to play Satie’s Gymnopedie no. 1 and I’m founding one problem. The sheet music is here: http://www.easysheetmusic.com/downloads/popular_classics/satie_gymnopedie.pdf I don’t understand these silence notes as in the 5th bar: does it mean I don’t have to play that left-hand G? Anyway, if I forget about that silence note, I’m not able of playing with my left hand the G for three beats and, at the same time, the BDF# chord for two beats. If I forget about the G, that’s ok, but then that bass note seems to be missed. As you'll see, silence notes of this kind keep going all along the piece. I hope I had explained it clearly. How can I play it alright? Thanks in advance | |

| I'm not quite sure what you are asking, but I'll make a guess. In the case of the left hand part there is a bass note that is played on beat one and a chord that is to be played on beat two. These are treated as different parts. Since the bass note is a three beat note and the chord above is supposed to be played on beat two, there is a one beat rest above the bass note on beat one for the "chord part" clear as mud? | |

| Thanks a lot for your help, Dr. Whack. I think I understand what you say. The silence applies to the chord: 1st beat silence, 2nd beat chord, 3rd beat chord. But then there's another problem left for me: i play the G bass note on beat one, but it's supposed to last 3 beats, and my left hand isn't big enough to play that chord if at the same time I want to keep the bass note. It's too far! That's the thing: i cannot play at the same time one bass note and a chord which are so distant in the keyboard. The right hand is even farther and busy with the melody, so it can't help. Is there any trick? Is it just that I need to improve my playing and I will be able to do it some time later? Or am I loosing something there? Thanks again | |

| This piece requires the use of the damper pedal. Though not specifically indicated by a pedal marking, it is appropiate and necessary to use it. Apply the pedal change every time there's a chordal/bass change, ie. at the beginning and on the 2nd/3rd beats if needed for each measure. BTW the use of the damper pedal has to be carefully applied to achieve the desired effect. You might consider taking a few lessons from a teacher to learn the proper technique. Also, the Piano World Forum http://www.pianoworld.com/ubb/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi is a great place to discuss about classical piano music. | |
