hey, does anybody know of good piano/vocal duet recordings out there OTHER than the two Bill Evans/Tony Bennett albums (which are already in my collection... wow, I'm still mesmerized by Bill's unbelievable touch, impecable pedaling and man, how he gets those harmonies to lead seamslessly one into the other speak so beautifully... )

These may not fall in the same category as Bennett/Evans and probably not what you had in mind, but still great performances:

Bette Midler's "One For My Baby" from Johnny Carson's second to last show

Mary Chapin Carpetner's "Only a Dream" with Matt Rollings

Wynonna Judd's "Is It Over Yet" with (I think) Herbie Hancock

Michael McDonald's "I Can Let Go Now" accompaning himself

I'll gladly add to this list Dr. and Mrs. Whacky if they ever get around to recording  (hint hint)!!

hehe - we're talking about it.  We were going to do a vocal w/quartet thing, but have actually as of late considered just the two of us (vocal /solo piano)

Thanks for the honorable mention:)

You have a version of Wynona and Herbie?  On the "Tell Me Why" album, the songwriter, Billy Kirsh played it with a string section - beautiful!  i'd like to hear herbie's version:)

You're right.  I think Herbie played on Only A Dream..I'll have to check the liner notes.

Another duet I just thought of is Chaka Khan/Bruce Hornsby's "Love Me Still"

Don't forget Diana Krall. Though she accompanies herself most of the time, it's a really good look at how to play around a vocalist.

"Love Me Still" is in our plans our duo album - love it!  (not really jazz, but who cares?)

I like Diana Krall's playing - very tasty.

Good call Scot!  She does a solo version of Jingle Bells on some Christmas compilation that is brilliant!  She sings it and swings the heck of it on piano, doing the walking bass/comp thing and a nice solo on it as well.

thanks guys! You've given me nice list of things to check out. Perhaps doing a few Diana Krall transcriptions will help me develop that swinging jazz accompanying style I'm striving for...

Steve

'What's New' from 'Oscar Peterson meets Louis Armstrong'. Solo piano, Louis on vocals only. Lovely!

Diana Krall 'Body and Soul' from Stepping Out. Solo piano/vocal.

Harry Connick JR 'Where or When' from his Harry Met Sally CD. Solo piano/vocal.

Lets not forget 'Makin' Whoopee' from the Fab Baker Boys!

Frank Sinatra made a number of recordings with Bill Miller on solo piano.  Typically these were "saloon songs" like One For My Baby.  I think Bill Miller's solo accompaniments were really top notch, never too intrusive.  However, as far as I know there is no collection of Frank + solo piano.
