| inspired by Ole, I would like to open a thread on the best piano solos ever played in jazz history. One of my most favorite is W. Kelly's solo on Freddy the Freeloader (on KoB). | |
| Ole -- 05/01/2005, 13:53:05 -- #13440 | |
| The Jarret solo on It could happen to you, from the Tokyo 96`album, is also amazing! But I agree with you on the Kelly solo, it is awesome! | |

| My vote goes to the simple yet awesomely froody solo on Horace Silver's Song For My Father on the album by the same name. | |

| anybody knows the kenny kirkland solo on ana maria (on his own record). To me it has all: melodic parts, impressive double times at the wright point, nice outs a.s.o. What do you guys think? | |
| savage -- 05/03/2005, 15:03:12 -- #13502 | |
| Yeah, Kenny is great. My favorite Kirkland solos are "Spartacus" from Branford Marsalis-Crazy people music and "Chambers of Tain" from Wynton Marsalis-Black Codes. savage | |

| sounds like you are talking about piano solos in ensemble situations?? if so: 01.)all the Chick solos on the "Light as a Feather album" if they are not disqualified for being on a rhodes. 2. all McCoy Tyners solos done on any and all recordings with Coltrane. | |
| jpof -- 05/19/2005, 09:19:25 -- #13968 | |
| Might I add: Keith Jarrett's unaccompanied "interlude" on the tune "Funky Tonk" from Miles Davis' album Live Evil(1970). So good! John | |

| It's too subjective to discuss. | |
| Ole -- 05/31/2005, 15:23:27 -- #14338 | |
| We are not discussing, we are sharing... I someone recommend a solo, it probably is a good solo, and then it can be an inspirating for others to listen to and transcribe it... | |
| Ole -- 05/31/2005, 15:24:53 -- #14339 | |
| Jason Rebello solo on "Never Coming Home", from Stings "Sacred Love" album..and Kirklands solo on "Bring on the night"... Amazing... | |

| My two favorite solos: 1) Wes Montgomery - No Blues / Smokin' At The Half Note w/ Wynton Kelly. Even though it's not a piano solo, that solo has so many great ideas packed into it that I never grow tired of listening to it. 2) McCoy Tyner - Passion Dance / The Real McCoy. Pure modal ecstasy! One of the best examples of what made Tyner unique (parallel fourth L.H. voicings, pentatonic R.H. improvisation and inside/outside playing. | |

| hmmm...that's what opinions are - and they can be very insightful. Don't you have any? Fred Lipsius solo on "Smiling Phases" from the Blood Sweat & Tears Album, "Blood Sweat & Tears - killer!! BTW, Oscar played a killer solo on "Sunny" from an album called "Motions and Emotions" - one of my all time favs Geroge Shearing "Soon It's Gonna Rain" from an album called "Blues Alley Jazz) Larry Williams (sax and piano) plays some of the coolest solos I've ever heard. Check out old Seawind albums, Al Jarreau, Lee Ritenhour, etc... And of course Jerry Hey (Trumpet, Flugel) all his solos are fab There was a ~just to name a few besides the obvious ones previously mentioned:) | |

| Lyle Mays on Pat Metheny's "Ozark". A criticism of Lyle is that he plays too many white keys, but I have to disagree. | |
| Dr. Whack -- 06/08/2005, 17:42:54 -- #14777 | |
| he he...well there are more white keys than black, so he can't be all bad:) - I've never heard that one before. I always joke that I can't play high notes - maybe it's the same kinda thing? | |
| jmkarns -- 06/09/2005, 18:07:36 -- #14821 | |
| Hey, that's why there's 88! | |
