Sorry to beat a dead horse, but transcribing Wynton Kelley is something you should do by hand. He's easy to transcribe and you'll benefit by trying to figure it out all because your ear will get a lot stronger- by transcribing by hand you will better be able to play the notes you hear in your own solos.

Hi Scot! But is it not the same thing if you are able to sing the solo to yourself and then after you are able to do this then look at the transcribed solo and physically see whats going on and break it down and analyse it bit by bit? Cheers...

One of the nice results of transcribing is not only being able to sing the melody to yourself, it's being able to write it down with all the right timing and notes.  This is the part that REALLY works your ear.

Not that singing it then learning it from sheetmusic is a bad way to go, it's just not as effective as doing it all yourself.

If you want to get good, you gotta do the homework!  There aren't any shortcuts. But once you do the homework, the same homework that I do and just about any big time pianist out there did (and still does), you'll get to much greater levels of playing than you thought possible.

Look at the young guy Erin Parks for example. He's playing, or was playing, with Terence Blanchard at  the old age of 18 or something.  He transcribed lots of stuff, practiced the right way, and took a very scientific approach to how he learned, and now he's one of the brightest young jazz piano stars out there.
