Ooops... unfamiliar with how this forum works.... accidentally posted no message...

Hello all!

I am currently in my final year of school and for my music course I have to do quite a few "classical" pieces, so I have to practice for them for an hour at least everyday. My question is, what is the best way to maintain my classical training and learn jazz at the same time? I can't really jam all that often because of a lack of jazz musicians (smallish australian town...) Unfortunately I can't listen to nothing but jazz because of my music course and my private classical training, but I thought that perhaps at least the technical practice was covered by my classical... any suggestions on how to balance the  two?

Oh and by the way, are there many/any australians out there? Jazz pianists seem to be hard to find here...

Oh and by the way are there any australians out there?

Since I started doing kazz 2 years ago, I have spent very little time practicing classical.  The things that jazz will do is vastly improve your ear training.  This helps for simpler classical pieces, but I think what you will find difficult is  learning lots of new classical repertoir at the same time you work to improve in jazz. I have found, though, that I have been able to keep up the classical repertoire I learned before.

There is some jazz technique which overlaps with classical, but most of the difficult stuff in jazz does not involve playing fast.  It involves knowing what notes to play at what time, and so in most respects I think that jazz and classical practicing do not overlap.

Are you hoping to go professional?

I think it was Duke Ellington who said,

"There are only two types of music; good and bad"

Everything you study and listen to will shape you as a musician - it's all good:)  But you're right, you NEED to find some folks to play with.

I remember running out after my senior recital (classical) to play a jazz gig for 7 bucks in a little joint downtown - hehe - the good ole days

And it was Louis Armstrong who said "All music is "Folk Music"" cause he ain't never heard no Horse playin music.
I think we all balance jazz and classical differently because they are really two completely different things  while both being Folk Music.  For me I balance them the same way I balance my life and Skiing.  In the way that Classical music is strictly a Winter sport for me.  Whereas jazz is year round..... really my real life...
Classical is just a foreign hobbby thingy I do in the Winter for kicks.  Also where I live gigs and Women are more plentiful in the Summer and there really is no time for extra little hobbys.
