| Hi, Does anyone recommend any good instructional DVDs? Are they worth it. Instuctional DVDs always strike me as being a little cheesy. I am hoping there is one out there that is worth it. I know the Barry Harris stuff is good but that may be a little too advanced for me right now. Thanks all | |

| I like the ones by drummers the best. Some of them have rhythm sections with them too. | |

| Hi jazzwanabee phew I am glad someone else finds the Barry Harris stuff too advanced...I have volumes I & II and to be honest they are way too complicated for me. I have been playing around with the "Sudnow Method" for a few weeks now and I have to say the voicings he teaches are simple-ish to learn and exactly the sounds that ring my bell (if you know what I mean) However, there is a sackload of helpful stuff on this website (with quite amazing time and effort put into it by some really helpful players who visit this site) but, to be honest I still find it waaaay beyond my level...but, i'll keep reading hoping one day something is gonna click. regards Lee | |

| My favorite is Warren Bernhardt's You Can Play Jazz Piano Lesson 1 from homespuntapes.com. Don't know what level you are but the first half he goes over basic stuff like circle of fifths, ii-V-I progressions etc....but the best part is he disects Autmn Leaves as a solo piano piece...no note transcriptions but great overhead shots if you want to learn about left hand playing on solo piano...I may pick up the DVD version so I can get clean freeze frames of his left hand voicings...he swings his but off. If you're not familiar with Warren, his style is very similar to Bill Evans (he was once a student of Evans). Larry | |

| Hi jazzwanabee I also have Warren Bernhardts dvds. I bought the set of 3. I have been doing classical piano for some time, but only got into jazz around January. Warrens dvd 1 has lots of useful material. Its just as well you can rewind & repeat!! If you are a beginner then this dvd will be invaluable in showing how to move around the keyboard. However, be prepared to fill in your knowledge from other sources as well. For example, during the early stages of the "Autum Leaves" lesson, Warren declares that he assumes you "know someting about chords!" At this point, I turned to Randy Halberstadts book "Metaphors for the musician". I can highly reccomend this text. Specifically I used chapter 10: inversions to understand the voicings for the chords I needed. Once I had this I was able to return to the DVD.Now I am on to learing the scales which go with the chords, ready to begin improvising the Autumn leaves melody. Its hard work, but I'm enjoying the journey. Good Luck Chris J. | |
