how to use altered minor chord? like Am7-5

johnq -- 06/06/2005, 07:09:28 -- #14626
This chord usually functions as a II chord in the minor. I've not heard it called an altered minor chord before.
the -5 is diatonic with the harmonic minor when building up a chord on the second degree.

A-7 b5 can also be vi in the minor progression i vi ii V

I've just discovered (OK, been taught) some really nice rootless voicings for ii7-5 V -9-13.  In C -- F Ab C D / F Ab B Eb / E G A D.  Particularly nice in when going to a minor root.  Oh, I guess the ii isn't rootless.  This helped me a lot.  Other inversions work fine.

what do you yhink if i use this chord as passing chord?
and sometime i like to use iv#m7b5 to subtitute the vim7 and IVM7.
