Hey folks,

I'm probably over stepping my bounds again:), but I as I read through the very entertaining posts, I become a little bothered by some of the foul language and "flaming" being used. (myself included)  It reminds me a bit of "road rage" where ordinarily nice people turn into faceless monsters attacking other faceless individuals.

What occurred to me, is that I am so embarassed by my own behavior here as well as the behavior of some of the  other folks, that I do not feel comfortable recommending this site to students of mine and that is a shame.

We have a wonderful resource of individuals here with diverse backgrounds and experiences.  I'm going to try to approach my posting as if I were talking to a good friend or a student. While it's important to question certain approaches/concepts and even point out flaws, we ought to try to do so without being offended or intending to offend.

~just my thoughts  (all right, let me have it:)

It would be good to be able to recommend the site to a wider audience.  This site is great to the nth degree. If everyone does as you suggest, the site would be unique.  I hope everyone else agrees with you Dr Whack.

I can do something about this.

Vulgarity in general is a sign of low intellect and the inability to intelligently communicate ideas.  It is hard to come down on people just because they are stupid and don't have a good vocabulary, however, I  do wish the people who are using profanity here would stop and consider the fact that profanity is not only destructive to a forum like this, it is often very offensive to people who don't want to see it.

And, it is against the terms of use policy which means I can and will delete accounts that continue to degrade this forum and website with foul language that is completely unnecessary.

I understand that art and culture is dying in the world, especially in the US, and that vulgarity even on prime time television is common place (the discovery channel has to bleep out every other word when the chopper and hot rod and other "builder" shows come on), but this is MY website, this is MY forum, and what I want is what happens.

So to everyone involved in the use of words that are not appropriate, treat this as a warning. Next time your accounts and messages will simply be gone.

Some "controls" have been put into place to help cut down on profanity being displayed.

Mike -- 06/11/2005, 13:51:27 -- #14941
Well just don't say these seven words and i think we will be ok:
shit, piss, fuck, cunt, cocksucker, motherfucker, and tits.

Mike -- 06/11/2005, 13:52:40 -- #14942
wow Scots got me looking like Ive got some weird thing about Frogs.

Dr. Whack -- 06/11/2005, 22:24:40 -- #14975
Love the new "controls" hehe:)

I'm glad a few of you agreed with me...and I'm glad those who don't left me alone:)

Dr. Whack -- 06/11/2005, 22:33:06 -- #14977
Ya know, that George Carlin bit is still funny - even with the "new" words:)

There is a problem with the word "ass" though, since the word "bass" is used quite often in this forum.

Dr. Whack,

Thank you for your insight and for being willing to initiate a
view of renewal for postings. Of course free speech is a precious right; language can be used to uplift people. Spirited discussions are fun to read, but extremely aggressive language that borders on abusive language often leads to shutting people down emotionally.
I have been feeling this way.......So thank you so much for speaking up.

Scot,
This site is, indeed, an indication of your being farsighted and generous. Because you have and continue to present something of quality, art and culture in this country, and around the world has a chance.
So I think each of us has a stake in determining what the arts are going to be like in our collective future. Again thanks for your leadership in keeping this site running, and also for all that you do in answering questions, and most of all for providing a place where interesting exchange and solid jazz piano information is available.

With appreciation,

MR

Yeah, I'm opposed to censorship and I certainly wouldn't want to step on free speach.  I don't really think we have to employ censorship or establish laws of decency if we all realize that these conversations are not simply private chat in a locker room:)  Many of us teach young children and I'm sure we wouldn't talk to them the we some of us have talked here, and that's what bothered me the most.

Having said that though, I'm really enjoying Scot's new "controls"!  I think they are a brilliant and light-hearted way to keep things within his (and those of most of us) deisred boundaries of intellect and decency :)

This is a great place to hang!

Thanks for bringing this up, Dr. Whack.  It is certainly an important thing to be mindful of.  However, in light of several recent posts, I would like to add that vulgarity per se is not the only problem here, as there generally seems to be an inreasingly disrespectful tone among everyone. I'm especially discouraged to see even many of our esteemed veterans resorting to caustic and insulting (albeit lacking the profanities) responses lately.  I don't know what the deal is, but  it's quite unfortunate and it's making me (and I'm sure many others) not want to come back to this site in the future...
