Scot -- 07/10/2005, 15:12:48 -- #16357
Hi Folks,

I'm going to take a road trip later this summer, probably in September some time. Something I'd like to do is organize LJP get togethers at people's homes or studios where we can play music and discuss it.

Even though I'm not as  experienced as some of you, I'd want to charge like $20 a head to do this so I don't go broke on the road trip.  Those who host the session would of course not have to pay anything.

What do you guys think?  I'm also interested in giving jazz  lessons to those who want to do some one-on-one stuff.

I'm probably going to keep this to the western U.S. and Canada unless there is a lot of interest from the east coast.

Let me know your thoughts; my own are just beginning to solidify on this.

Ole -- 07/10/2005, 15:24:17 -- #16358
Great idea. Could you come to Norway as well?  I could pay $30... :)

CynBad -- 07/10/2005, 17:00:33 -- #16360
Sounds like a cool idea.  I'm in the Port Orchard/Kitsap area, but I don't know if anyone else is!

bearman -- 07/10/2005, 17:44:14 -- #16361
Sounds great, Scot. I'd be interested in a lesson or two if you come up Kelowna BC way.

dudsy -- 07/10/2005, 22:09:07 -- #16364
duuuuddeee....scot, come to toronto!!!

Scot -- 07/10/2005, 22:39:08 -- #16369
Keep the cities coming.

If I agree to pass through a particular city I'll need a guarantee of at least five people for the "master class", so some of you will to do some footwork.

Kelowna is definitely a possibility. Just up north a ways.

Port Orchard: I'd probably do something up here in Bellingham and get a lot of local people involved

Norway: Hmmm.....

Toronto: very far indeed, and I heard there are giant mosquitoes!

You'll be welcome here in Barcelona.
Maybe on a future Overseas European Tour...

Styles -- 07/11/2005, 21:21:50 -- #16407
I'll keep this in mind

I'm from a small town in North Carolina

but I'm willing to travel

Hope this come together, could be a great learning experience for alot of people!

jmderay -- 07/12/2005, 01:42:33 -- #16410
Hi Scott,

I know : Nice, France is a bit far from home, but if you arrive before next tuesday evening, I invit you to the Oscar Peterson's live performance in Monte Carlo.

You can stay home, and feel free to teach me some jazz stuffs on my piano ;-))

Whatever, your idea is great, and lucky are the west coast musicians !! think about a future Europe tour !!

jmderay -- 07/12/2005, 01:46:19 -- #16411
Sorry for the 2 "t" error, SCOT, it was the emotion ;-)))

SolArt -- 07/12/2005, 03:20:43 -- #16413
Styles, what town is it? I've lived in several towns in NC. The hiking in the mountainous Carolinas, with their MANY waterfalls is simply the best!

Scot -- 07/12/2005, 09:41:40 -- #16426
It's possible I'll do it in Europe before I do it in the US. I really want to wander around for about a month... I am planning a trip SOMEWHERE for the late summer/early fall, so maybe Europe will be where I go.

France, Spain, Italy, these are some of the places I want to see. I also have some jazz friends in Sweden (or is it Norway? I can't remember!).

SolArt -- 07/12/2005, 11:19:31 -- #16431
There is indeed a lot to see in Europe.

Styles -- 07/12/2005, 12:06:18 -- #16433
Wilkesboro...
AKA
Moonshine Capital of the World, White Lightning City

About 45 minutes from Winston Salem/Greensboro
45 minutes from Appalchian State University

Scot -- 07/12/2005, 12:07:14 -- #16435
Kentuky?  Just guessing.  If I go there, will anyone provide me with some home made rum?

:)

jmderay -- 07/12/2005, 15:28:17 -- #16441
If you feel like visiting the french riviera by mid-september, room & (not home made) rhum provided here at my home. (and 2 pianos). I can also arrange jazz lessons for other pianists. 20$ pp & per lesson for you, no pb.

I'm in Nice (10 km from Monte Carlo and 30 from Cannes, and 1 h and a half from St Tropez, 20 mn from Italy). let me know.

SolArt -- 07/12/2005, 16:02:43 -- #16442
I believe I've driven crookedly through there before Styles! Corn likor, yahoo! ('Just kiddin')

Scot -- 07/13/2005, 01:11:49 -- #16459
The French Riviera is very high on my list of places to go...

Keep 'em coming folks, I'm trying to put little marks on a global map so I can see where the most "action" is going to be before I make a decision.

Seb -- 07/13/2005, 02:41:29 -- #16461
What about Paris?

SolArt -- 07/13/2005, 03:17:58 -- #16464
Scot, you lucky dog!

I recommend everyone in the States who's never been to Europe to simply GO before you die, it really is very nice & I believe you'll notice the people are, well, "user-friendly". Otherwise you won't know what you're missing & what other lifestyles are available. For example here in Germany 6-weeks worth of paid vacation per year is the norm. Plus there are many more paid holidays than in the States. Europe is more family-oriented than the US,  where it always seems to be , work, work, work. Tell Bush!

·Jesus -- 07/13/2005, 05:12:37 -- #16468
Scot, I'm sure you can easily enjoy a great trip thru Europe based upon LJP'ers contacts. I agree with SolArt, you're lucky! You've been doing a great work here, so it's well deserved.

I live about 25 km. from Barcelona and you can count on a room here. I have a 2nd hand digital Korg SP300, not much but enough for me. I'm very newbie and some lesson with you will be appreciated (maybe you fire me off of LJP when you listen to my playing, though).

Have you ever played with a flamenco spanish-guitar player? I can manage a funny session with some friends (not pros, just amateurs).

Ah, and think that German people spend those 6-weeks holidays round here because of the good weather and excellent and cheap food and drink ;)

CynBad -- 07/13/2005, 08:11:58 -- #16475
Spain is not to be missed!  Scot, you must be sure to visit Spain!
I've traveled in Spain twice, but it was in the late 70's, early 80's.

jmkarns -- 07/13/2005, 08:43:07 -- #16479
You just have to come to Albuquerque. Pleeeeeease?
I would gladly pay 20.00 dollars, even offer a scholarship to a
deserving student.
Let me know how I can make this happen.

7 -- 07/13/2005, 08:48:16 -- #16480
If you go to Europe, the one town not to be missed is Antwerp.

One of the most beautiful (and most "European") cities in the world.

The best beer in the world and the bars are open 24/7.

A truly incredible musical instrument museum there too.

Great party town!

Did I mention that it has the best beer in the world and the bars are open 24/7?

Also it has the best beer in the world and the bars are open 24/7.

PS: The best beer in the world and the bars are open 24/7!!!!

"The French Riviera is very high on my list of places to go... "

look no further : german spend their 6 weeks here !! ... before going to spain ;-))) because they know we have the nicest lolitas around !!! Maybe it's a reason why I play piano so badly (some choices have to be made in the life ;-)) Just kidding, as I love my wife !! .. and Jazz !! Again, You're welcome to come and teach around.

Scot -- 07/13/2005, 10:10:50 -- #16484
Ah, Spain... perhaps start off in Spain, make my way up through the Riviera...

I lived for five years in East Asia and the pacific rim- South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, etc, playing  music. I'm well acquainted with the wonderful social aspects  of being outside the U.S.

d3dy -- 07/13/2005, 10:15:05 -- #16485
scott, please come to Indonesia.my sweet homeland.....
I'll show you some nice Indonesian traditional, and see how i make them sound jazzy.

sid -- 07/13/2005, 13:08:37 -- #16492
Well, I'd offer my corner as a place to stick a little coloured pin on your globe, but NO-ONE ever made it here (except, amazingly enough, Mark Levine one time, but that's a long story), so good luck Scot and be careful out there among them English.

Dr. Whack -- 07/13/2005, 14:54:21 -- #16496
Yeah I have 6 bedrooms, 4 baths and two kitchens but they're all stuffed with people right now - But I'd love to take you to lunch if you make it to the midwest:)

Scot -- 07/13/2005, 15:32:11 -- #16497
I need to make a system here on LJP that will help make it easier to organize this thing.  Anyone have any ideas?

goldborg -- 07/13/2005, 22:29:05 -- #16505
hey Scot,

If you come up to Vancouver, i think a lesson would be a great idea...

or checking out the local jazz hole  (the cellar)...

7 -- 07/13/2005, 22:54:38 -- #16507
Something similar to your teacher database ought to do the trick. Since it's searchable by country, state, zip code, etc.

Interested parties could input their data and then you could compile that information to help plan your itinerary.

albetan -- 07/14/2005, 07:19:59 -- #16517
Scot:
Define a zone for your first LJP-trip and all guys interested in it will write a post to Scot's Office.
Good luck.

Scot -- 07/14/2005, 09:07:04 -- #16521
Goldborg- I'm in Vancouver on a regular basis (remember, I live in Bellingham).  If you'd like a lesson, we can easily set something up.

I need to make a system here on LJP that will help make it easier to organize this thing.  Anyone have any ideas?  ....

Maybe you may first tell a little bit more about the trip :

When do you plan it ??
will it last 3 weeks, 3 months or 3 years
   What are your favorite destinations
What are you expecting (in term of hosting, teaching lessons,
playing in clubs and so on ..)

After that maybe you could create an email address for the occasion, so that everyone interested could propose you things (scot2005tour@yahoo.com is still available ;-)) then you can decide what you do. Also, a table (dates and destinations) on a page in this site could be created and reachable by anyone, so everyone decides which (and where) master class he or she can join ...

That's my view. Enjoy it.

JM.

Scot -- 07/15/2005, 13:39:57 -- #16572
Hmm, that really gave me a good idea, thanks!

goldborg -- 07/16/2005, 01:15:45 -- #16595
Scot... yeah, sure a lesson would be cool..  I'm more of a beginner w/ some classical background, so I could probably use some guidance...

when are you coming up to Vancouver again ?

Ole -- 07/16/2005, 10:17:59 -- #16598
Come to Oslo, or up to the north of Norway and experience the midnight sun! In Oslo I can borrow you my Rhodes and a grand piano, thnik it is a Steiway. I am studying music in Oslo and could probably get you some nice gigs. Maybe we go down Rainbow Studios and chech out the grand piano Jarrett has used on most of his studio solo piano records. He just loves that grand....

d3dy -- 07/16/2005, 11:17:52 -- #16599
Come to Indonesia please....I'm in Jakarta...I'll show you our native instrument called gamelan.and lets jazzying some Javanesse pelog tunes...

Scot -- 07/16/2005, 13:26:27 -- #16602
Ah, Jakarta... I played there for a couple months and still have some good friends in Jakarta.

jmderay -- 07/16/2005, 20:02:41 -- #16614
To make this project really start, and to get in touch with "interested fellows", maybe you could create a page in this site where we could fill a form and propose you things : hosting with dates, no of lessons expected, number of persons to join the lessons, possibilities to organize gratis or paid meetings with others jazzmen (for discussion or playing), pianos and studios possibilities ..and so on.

Unfortunately, I realize I've much more ideas in front of my computer than in front of my piano, improvizing ;-))) I return and try it ;-)))

jmderay -- 07/18/2005, 10:27:27 -- #16656
Scot,

One more idea (if you accept that one). For the Tour, get sponsored by your local newspaper, local jazz radio, or even City of Bellingham.
Some people have done that, here, in different domains (best is local newspaper), so that they get a financial aid and their "job" was to write each week (or fortnight) their own experience during the trip (what happens, who they meet, what they're doing ...). It's well appreciated here on local paper when it happens (maybe it's different in the US), brings you some money for the trip, and make you more famous (even if I don't doubt a second you already are in lots of places).

Scot -- 07/18/2005, 14:55:10 -- #16669
Jmderay- thanks for the tips.  I am working on a "tour" script that uses some of your ideas above.

The sponsorship thing is a good idea, but not my kind of work. This is where I'd need an agent or manager to take care of this kind of business.

So for now I'll pay for the trip but with money from lessons and clinics and maybe even some gigs, I don't think it will cost as much as it could.

jmderay -- 07/18/2005, 16:42:24 -- #16684
Okay,

Good luck !! and again, it's a nice experience you've been thinking of !! I'm sure you will achieve it as you expected.
