LearnJazzPiano.com archives: Music download sites / services

Well, this is frustrating!  Since the wife cracked down on the space taken by CDs I've been getting much of my music from emusic and loving it.  However, there are limites to what's available there (indie label only) and if I want, say,  some Nat King Cole, I have to find another source.

I was going to try MSN because it's a one-time deal (I don't want another subscription) but it also is protected content and I just won't do that (not to mention that to get it on my portable I'd have to burn it, re-rip it, and then copy it out -- a work around MSN support told me about).  And, no, I don't want to give my stuff away -- not the point.

So I started looking and it looks like most of these download sites (legal now -- you who record deserve some of my income!) are either subscription or buy in to this protection thing.  Rhapsody requires that you get their software although they do then allow one-time buys (Rhapsody lite) but I think (hard to find these answers) their music is protected as well and may be a problem on my Zen.

Anyway, long story not so short -- is anyone out there happily using a service such as I am looking for?

Thanks,
Scott

Legal?  Probably not but I'm open to the possibility.

There is a lot of great free music on music.download.com

Every type of jazz is covered.

Many great indie artists.

Interesting but not what I'm looking for.  I'll browse around in it once in a while.  I did get one track -- nice music although the sound quality is bad.  Seems to be artists loading single tracks for download so quality (both musically although this one is nice and sound) may be iffy.

I'm really look for something where I can buy the big lable stuff that I can't get on emusic.

Say, any of your stuff there?

But thanks.
