| I was thinking of the old Beatles Albums tonight. You know the ones that they said would say something wierd if you played them backwards. So I got this Idea to play back a Kenny G. Album backwards. I thought if anyone these days would try something screwed up like that it would be him. Well you would be amazed ... No there was no message no "Paul is Dead" or nothing like that no words.... But this did happen. THE WHOLE ALBUM SOUNDED BETTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It finally gave him a liitle edge, a little creativity. I highly reccommend it... If you have to play a Kenny G. album PLAY IT BACKWARDS. | |

| I have grown weary of this whole Kenny G. topic. Before I go on, I must make it clear: I HATE KENNY G. JUST AS MUCH AS EVERYONE ELSE. But give the guy a break. We all know it's not jazz, and I'm pretty sure he does too. He is making instrumental pop, or whatever you want to call it, but who are we to say that he shouldn't make music because it's not jazz. The Beatles played straight-up pop for the first half of their career, but we still let them make that music. And they hadn't put near the number of hours that Kenny G. has put into learning his horn. Despite his musical tastes, no one can say that he doesn't have tremendous facility on the sax. This is not a defense of his crappy, thoughtless music, but more of just a call to say, "Leave the poor guy alone. YOU go play what YOU want, and let HIM play what HE wants." Peter P.S. This isn't a personal attack on Mike, but a message to everybody out there concerned more with what Kenny G. is playing than what they are playing. | |

| Not a Chance! For all the people that have critiqued my playing in my life while I have made peanuts compared to Kenny G. For all the People that have critiqued my playing in my life that I have not had the pleasure of holding over a railing at a Hockey Rink. I will take out my frustrations most righteously on Kenny G in the form of these critiques. Amen And it not shall ye so easily stop me. "the poor guy"........ give me a break Are you Kenny G Pete? If you are Kenny G and you are here sincerely trying to learn something then I would stop because I am destroying my freaking turtable needles Playin your records backwards man!!!! | |
| ClosetBlues -- 03/09/2004, 10:29:38 -- #2251 | |
| If you play the blues backward... you get your wife back, your dog back, your house back, your job back... But I haven't had a turntable in 20 years. What can I do to get my turntable back? | |

| 2 entries found for TROLLING. 1. To fish for by trailing a baited line from behind a slowly moving boat. 2.# Music. 1. To sing in succession the parts of (a round, for example). 2. To sing heartily: troll a carol. So I dont fish in the first place so I can not stop doing that. And I singing heartily is part of my profession so I can not stop that for you either... la la la ..... Hey Kenny G albums sound pretty good in the dishwasher too I found out and thay are fun to watch crash against the rocks when you through them into the wind down at the beach. troll.. troll.. troll... | |

| You know, if Kenny G. were openly gay, it would be politically incorrect to hate him. But it would still be OK to hate his boyfriend. Go figure. | |
| Rick -- 03/10/2004, 06:41:45 -- #2277 | |
| I figure that the only reason there is the bitterness about Kenny G that there is is due to the fact that he is billed as a "jazz" artist. Therefore, the fact that it is clearly not jazz and he's made a fortune from something faslelly labelled as "jazz" probably accounts for the hard feeling towards him. I dont like going to my local record store and seeing more Kenny G albums in the jazz section than most of the best jazzers in there (I think the only guys with more are Miles and Coltrane)...thats it. Basically, to put it short... Noone would hate him if he wasnt billed as a Jazz artist (a successful one as that). End. | |

| *falselly! *feelings! | |
| Mike -- 03/10/2004, 12:54:32 -- #2293 | |
| lol 7 , thats like there is currently a movement to support gay marraige but oppose gay mortgages. You know I would not have been surprized at all to find out the forum had a large gay representation.... but a large group of closet Kenny G. fans.... this is a little hard to take. | |

| Great story on Kenny G and "attitudes"... http://www.berklee.edu/commencement/2002/foster.html For those that think his first recording came out in the mid 80's, check out his prior work with the old Jeff Lorber Fusion group under his real name (then you'll know why he shortened it to just "G."). Sure, you won't confuse his playing with Charlie Parker's, but so what. Peteboypete couldn't have said it any better. I never got the impression the someone like Kenny G pulling one over on everyone, laughing all the way to the bank. Maybe he just got tired of the competitive jazz and fusion environment of the time. He seems to me to enjoy the music he's making....good for him. Same goes for bashers of David Foster, David Sanborn, George Benson, Toto, or anyone who hasn't attended the Wynton School of Music (i.e. you gotta be "this" or "that" or have to worship Duke Ellington or Monk) to be considered a jazz musician or any musician of worth. I don't remember but was there the same type of uproar when Miles started recording covers of Toto and Cyndy Lauper tunes in the early '80's, (but he can do no wrong, correct?) I'm still scratching my head on the stuff he recorded since he went electric....guess I'm just not hip enough to get it! :-) Sorry for rambling.... Larry | |
| Dr. Whack -- 03/10/2004, 17:32:35 -- #2296 | |
| Excellent point...I went to a Miles concert in the 80s and it sucked! They played and A triad for what seemd like 45 minutes with Miles adding a schplatt here and there...what a waist of my money! | |
| Mike -- 03/10/2004, 20:20:43 -- #2304 | |
| Well David Foster in his commencement address is a little out to lunch. To assume because I critique and can not stand Kenny G. that I am a musical snob would be faulty. If this were so how could it be explained that I enjoy Cyndy lauper, Ben Folds Five, and cover Cold Play, STing, and occasionally the Carpenters on my gigs? He goes so far as to say " I guarantee you that Kenny G and Herb Alpert are just as fulfilled as John Coltrane and Miles Davis". Ridiculous!!!!!!!!! Thats would like saying " I guarantee you Dennis Kucinich gets just as much pussy as Richard Gere and Tom Cruise" I critique Kenny G. becuase he is a musician that gets credit in a field (jazz) for which he should get little or none. And for numurous reasons listed in previous posts in the old forum. With the massive money and support he has if I can cause one little bit of damage to him by badmouthing him here that would be worth it. And I will risk meeting him in a Hocky rink any day. If could sway one person to spending there money buying another artists cd instead of his that would certainly be worth it. | |
| Peteboypete -- 03/10/2004, 20:33:26 -- #2307 | |
| The important thing about that "fulfilled" comment is to see what is fulfilling them. Miles and Trane were fulfilled by a sense of artistic integrity, while Kenny G. is fulfilled by that big wad of cash in his wallet. We (by "we" I mean us snobbing musician-types) feel that artistic integrity is all that matters, but he doesn't and that doesn't affect my artistic beliefs anymore than some moron republican affects political beliefs. As for labeling I don't think Kenny G. labels himself as jazz. That's the greater public doing that, and we already new they were stupid. :) | |

| lol - Mike, how about a few words on Yanni? | |
| Mike -- 03/10/2004, 23:04:29 -- #2311 | |
| lol Whacky... good idea ... when I feel It has been a little too long since I have pissed anyone off I guess that might be a logical place for me to go if I have worn the Kenny G thing out for all its worth. | |
| Rick -- 03/11/2004, 10:15:13 -- #2345 | |
| Music is music...some people like it, some people dont...get over it | |
| Mike -- 03/11/2004, 14:24:05 -- #2383 | |
| I for one like music a lot. Maybe to sum up this thread I like Kenny G. too, if his music is played backwards on a turntalbe while I am triping on mushrooms and have consumed a pint of John Daniels. | |
