what kind of a piano do you use for your recordings?

dalty52 -- 06/18/2006, 10:13:51 -- #28056
Whatever the recording studio has :o)  In the case of the studio recordings on my site, it was a Steinway concert grand.  Those were recorded in the 120 room at Eastman.....that's the piano on which I got to rehearse with the Big Band everyday for two years :o) I surely miss that one.  You Must Believe in Spring was on a recital using the same Steinway.  The Carolina Shout recording was done in a Berklee practice room on a Yamaha upright.  His Eye is On the Sparrow was in a different recording studio in Rochester....can't remember.  Brighter Day and I Wish were with my Yamaha Motif.  Confirmation was on one of the ensemble room pianos at Eastman......I forget which one.

As far as what pianos I PREFER...I usually prefer Yamaha for jazz stuff, although, for some things Steinways are great(i.e. solo piano stuff).  Yamahas tend to cut through a little better in ensemble situations.  I played a Bosendorfer once and thought it was the best piano I'd ever played, but I can't really say it's my favorite, as I would need to play it a lot more.

Hey dalty, what's your live rig these days?

dalty52 -- 03/21/2007, 17:27:01 -- #28056
I'm using a Kurzweill SP-88 with a Motif ES Rack.  Nice and light, and does the job.  I appreciate the feedback you gave when I inquired about it last year.  The Kurzweil's interface sucks, but.......once I get it the way I want..........it works great.  Most gigs I use the same few patches, so the interface doesn't matter so much.  I LOVE that it's less than 30 lbs. AND has it's own internal sounds.  Some gigs I don't even use the rack, which is really killin.  I really think that the perfect, lightweight keyboard for gigging has yet to be invented.  Although, I didn't really check out any of the new stuff from NAMM this year........anything good?

Oh, forgot to mention.........I use the Fender Passport P-150 for my amp.  It's nice that it's light and folds up into one piece.  It requires a few more cables than I would like, but it sounds decent.  Stereo sound makes a big difference, IMO.
