Six minute Tatum transcription from this book: http://aebersold.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=ATSB&Category_Code=PIASOL
(If you click on the 'see within' link, the last sample page is the tenth page from this tune)
I haven't managed to get through it all yet, still working out the accidentals & fingering.

Anyone tackled it and comment?

Andy

P.S. It's from the third CD of the Tatum Pablo Solo Masterpieces

Maybe in the next lifetime.  I'm still working on the Keith Jarrett transcription.

I know what you mean, finally played through to the end this evening.  The first and last pages are pretty easy, it's the 15 page bit in the middle that's a real nightmare.

Where is the Jarret transcription available?  I just learnt his beautiful version of 'Over the Rainbow' - took me about two months to memorise the three pages.

Regards

Andy

Tatum also did a duet with Johnny Hodges.  It's a slower more soulful
version of "All The Thing You Are".  Definitly worth a listen.

I searched but can't find the duet.  Is it currently available?

I stand corrected.  That was Art Tatum with Ben Webster, entitled
'The Tatum Group Msterpieces' on Pablo records.  I inherited the LP from my father-in-law.   I think some of these tunes are reissued though so check Amazon.

Ahhh.  I've been decorating this last week or two and have been through all six CD's of the Complete Group Masterpieces.  They are just amazing in parts, hearing Tatum start, then tinkling with virtuosity behind.
Buddy de Franco keeps up and Lionel Hampton has his moments(playing Making Whoopee he just lets rip and Tatum stays in the background).

Incidentally, the boxed set has 6 CD's, but bought individually there are 8 or more.  Never quite figured out whether they released more or if the boxed set complete?

Another good boxed set is the Smithsonian Collection of Jazz Piano.
All the great ones are in there including Willy "The Lion" Smith, Fats Waller, Jelly Roll Morton etc...  A friend loaned the 4 CD's to me and I am amazed at the technique that is displayed there.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I played the Ben Webster track a few times yesterday and reckon Tatum uses quite a few of the same or very similar runs and chords as in the solo.  Webster reminds me of Stan Getz in slow mode.
Regarding the Tatum solo transcription, I have the first four pages and last three going.
I guess most people are playing their own 'real' jazz.
