| I,m sometimes playing band in my church. We played praise and worship song to accomp. the singer. There are lead guitar, bass.keyboard and drum in the band and I,m playing keyboard.Sometimes I,m playing block chord with only RH,sometimes broken chord with RH only. The question is what the best thing to do for the LH when we are playing in praise and worship or maybe jazz song when we are accomp. the singers.Thank you | |

| If you got the chord covered with the Right hand , then you can play a single note Root in you Left hand. Or a Root and a 5th, or an Octave. | |

| Yeah or play nothing, I find that when I play in church Im not really needed, especially if there is a guitar, and also the songs are so simple and boring that I tend to play more effect type things rather than chords with a piano sound, I like church but I HATE the music that is played, its so crappy and naff, anyway enough ranting I personally would only cover the chord with your right hand and maybe add a root like jazz+ says, but be careful not to make the song sound too bass heavy. | |

| In worship (and in most pop oriented bands), unless you're playing something melodic, like an actual line or arpeggio in the left hand (which the bass should have covered) I would just play roots/5ths and try to stay out of the bass player's way. Also, try to keep the right hand in a different register than the guitar. Out of curiousity, are you on a piano or an actual keyboard? For jazz/singers, I would use a root or fifth or bassline in the left hand. | |

| How good is the bass player? If he/she's mediocre help 'em out with bass lines if yours are better I say. If the music bores you you shouldn't be playing, & you also are missing the point of the music. I would say the music has an enormous deal of feeling, so even simple songs are vehicles to express that in. For example Christmas songs are often simple but just packed with emotions of Christmas' gone by, so just cause a song's simple it can still be enriching. | |

| Why don't you try playing rootless chords (or any other voicings you like) in you left hand, out of the bass range.....and with your right hand make some short fills that complement the spaces in music.?? Thats what I do... You can also mix both methods play chords with left hand a moment.....and on another moment play chords with your right hand and root note in octave with your left hand. Give it a try.. | |
