Folks, If you had $1500 in your budget for a PC that does a good job on midi & audio recordings, what will you go for. One that is not prone to latency, and such. Yaw.

$400 or so for an echoaudio.com audiofire8 and as much as you have left on a Costco computer.  For recording you'll want to make sure you have the fastest hard drives available (SATA at 7200 RPM or above) and at least two gigs of memory (now days standard for most medium end computers). Make sure you have several hundred gigs of hard drive space. Computer speed should be 2 ghz or above (easy and cheap) and you won't have to worry about a nice sound card if you get a multi-track recording device like the echoaudio one above. With echoaudio, you don't have to worry about latency for audio or midi. What else... that's about it.  PC's are pretty good these days.  Stick with big names.  I mentioned costco because they have good machines for good prices and a no-questions return policy in case they come out with a better computer in three months that you want. return the old, get the new. Buy a portable hard drive for all your data.  I bought a portable 80gb hard drive at costco for $114 and use it for all of my data.  Very portable, very nice. If you want more information, there are other forums online that are dedicated to recording on your computer, and the people there really know what they are talking about.
