I have studied swing piano and some Oscar and Nat. My next stop was Tyner and Evans. But how foolish I was to ignore Bud Powel. He aint nothing but shell voicings and horn lines; OR SO SOME WOULD HAVE US BELIEVE! But I knew there was a link missing in my Jazz education and that link was the beautiful Bud. So do yourself a favour and tune in to Bud. Bro'

Bud had a tragic life, but his playing is par excellant!  That right hand is hard to beat.  Check out Tempus fugit.

That link is missing in my education too... Some good albums/songs to begin transcribing Bud ?

A good place to start is The Definitive Bud Powell on Verve. Includes Bud's Bubble, Tempus Fugit, Cherokee, Un Poco Loco. And the Song Trellis site has a good selection of Bud chord progressions, including Tempus Fugit. I also think the Bebop piano book/CD (Hal Leonard) is amazing value and is mostly about Bud. The Levine Book leads you into Post-bop jazz, with lots of Powell references along the way, but I think spending time with Bud lays a solid foundation for the more advanced reharmonizations and voicings of Evans and Co. Bro'

Did you ever here of a book called "Connecting Chords with Linear Harmony" published by Hal Leonard? By reading up on it, it sounds like it may also be very useful in terms of being able to analyse transcriptions and create lines. I was thinking about ordering it and I was just wondering if you had any experience with this book. Thanks

John Thank you. That is the first time I have seen any footage of Bud. Amzazing - reminds me of the old clips of Tatum - the hands play but no effort appears to be required on the part of the musician - playing comes as natural as speaking. Also, inspired me to play Get Happy - first version of the song to do that! Cheers Bro'
