does anyone have any personal recommendations for good jazz piano cds?

Keep your eyes on the left side bar as you browse the site.  I put a lot of great CDs there for people to consider.

What kind of music are you interested in?

One of the best resources for great jazz piano cds is the Maybeck Recital Hall series by Concord records.

A visit to www.jazzreview.com may help.  They have a lot of jazz cd's with reviews of course.

Any my usual note promoting emusic (http://www.emusic.com) which has the whole Maybeck series at about 20 cents a track.  It is great solo work!

There is a set of 6 cd's I listen to often called Jazz Piano Essentials.  Each CD contains music by a different composer: Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Richard Rodgers, and Thelonious Monk.   I like this CD set because on any CD each song is played by someone different.  I can listen to a number of individual styles with different interpretations of Standards.

Also, I should note that I downloaded these from emusic based on a tip someone from this site gave me a while ago (probably sdm)

I love Oscar Petersons "A summer night in Munich". "When summer comes" being my favourite song with 9:18 minutes quite the correct length for me :) Give it a try and listen to it. If I can do it, you can do it too *grin*

I second the emusic rec -- I was in it before they had the limit on the amount of tracks you could download, and they have got a good amount of stone classics from some of the guys you mention.

It's up to you, I guess, if you want to go in depth into one artist's catalogue/oeuvre, by, for example, grabbing all of Evans's Riverside stuff or whatever, but if you're just building a collection, I'd recommend picking up the stone classics before going all obscure.  After all, they're classics for a reason (some reason?).  There's this cat on musicplayer/Keyboard mag forum who fancies himself some kind of player/Bill Evans fanatic, but hadn't even heard the Vanguard dates, which blew my mind.  Stick with the best, and you'll have some common ground with just about anyone who listens to jazz or plays jazz.

That said, "The Challenge" by Hampton Hawes is one of my favorites and one of the first albums I got as a young teenager -- I'm disgusted that they won't release it on CD.  It's one of the best solo piano records, ever.

BTW, anyone interested in emu -- I'd love the free tracks for sending you in invite.  Email me at scottm!colheli.com.
