LearnJazzPiano.com archives: Traditional finger settings for scales

Hi everyone,

Anyone knows where the "classic" fingering for the scales are documented?

There's for example this funky Lenny Tristano stuff:
http://www.humboldt1.com/~jazz/lenny.html

But I'm looking for the "classic" , "traditional" finger notation of the scales.

you should have a copy of Hanon.

Hanon what? Is Hanon an author? Has he written multiple works? What particular one is it you think I should get?

Hanon was a 19th century organist who wrote a famous finger exercise book. It can be useful if you use it properly .Ignore the metronome markings and practise advice and play each exercise slowly and accurately in every key using the same fingering.

An even better exercise book is that one by Oscar Beringer. (It has very good technique and practise advice) If you can get all the way through this book and master it you'll be able to play just about anything. Like Hanon it has all the correct fingering for the usual scales.

So, I guess it is "Oscar Beringer: Daily Technical Studies for Piano", as found on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/Oscar-Beringer-Daily-Technical-Studies/dp/076926414X/sr=8-1/qid=1161615833/ref=sr_1_1/104-6742807-1961528?ie=UTF8&s=books

Added to my wishlist. Now I only need to 1) get it, 2) complete it, and 3) I'm a maestro!

and the Hanon thingy I presume is "Virtuoso Pianist in 60 Exercises - Complete: Piano Technique":
