LearnJazzPiano.com archives: Fingering Dilemma

Good morning all,
I was hoping somebody out there may be able to advise me on whether or not is is acceptable to cross the 4th finger under the 3rd in the left hand when playing a walking base line. When I am playing a walking base line over a 2-5-1 progression in the key of Bb i.e. C-7 to F7 to Bbmaj7 I am playing the following - Over the C-7 I play a desending Root 5 Root Lower (i.e. C - G - C - E) leading into the root of of the v chord. I finger this as follows - LH 1st 2nd 5th 3rd which leaves me in a dilemma as to how to approach the root of the 5 chord. I have been crossing my 4th finger in the LH under the 3rd to play the root of the 5 chord and I am not sure if this is proper technique. It feels a little uncomfortable and thats why I am worried about it. Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.....

why not play the E with your 4th finger? and then the F with your 3rd.
you would if you were playing a C appeggio.. or the first exercise in Hanon...

play the F with your thumb, that frees up your hand into a better position and leaves it free to go either up or down as you wish. don't cross your 4th under your third, it distorts your whole hand unless you're doing it really smoothly and sortoff lobbing the note - also, it's easier to lob a note smoothly if you're on a thumb as you can hold it down and sustain it if you need to as it's a sort of axis off which your hand can balance.

If I play the E with my 4th finger  and then the F with my third and then i want to ascend an octave then this is a pretty awkward stretch. Hey McJazz good to hear from you again. I hope you are keepin well. I'm trying your suggestion here on the table at work and I'm wondering why I never tried that at home myself. I guess I'm working too hard these days. Thanks to both of your suggestions, I will weigh one against the other and see how I get on....

you could play the E with your 4th finger and then get a fifth finger on the F (don't put fifth under 4, just shift your hand position very smoothly - this leaves you free to stretch the octave. good to talk to you too Elwapo, I am well and was also trying my suggestion on the work desk! mcJazz

I would definatly play thumb - 3rd - thumb - 4th - 3rd,
                                     C     -  E    -     C     -  E   -  F

Do not cross 4 under 3, like mc jazz says it distorts your hand and also more importantly looks really stupid, remeber that when you can always make your hands look good whilst playing, it think that crossing the 4 under 3 would like rather retarded!
