Hi folks,
I just discovered this incredibly talented pianist Taylor Eigsti. The latest record is simply fantastic and very promising!
What you guys think?

I just bought one of his CD's, so I'll let you know in a few days.  You owe me $9.99 if it's no good.  :)

The same old caveat applies.  "Buyer beware."
I wait with everyone else for the verdict.

It's on iTunes, you can hear clips of everything.

Not enough 'stink' for me.
He is an excellent player but I really dislike the band and the recording.
Sounds like music school.

if he sounds like music school I want to be in that school!
it's much more than that believe me

He'll definitely be a name in jazz, if he isn't already, but it will take him some time to put a bit of soul into his playing. The only problem with the prodigy's as far as my musical preferences go is that they can do anything they want harmonically, they have an innate understanding of that stuff, plus they have chops and the drive and desire to explore stuff for weeks on end.

However the only thing lacking is experience.  When they get in their late 30's or so, that's when I really tend to get more into their playing, pretty much across the board, because finally their soul has matured to catch up with the amazing musical talents they possess.

So, I have nothing against this guy's playing, but I won't be purchasing any CD's of his for a while, at least not until I can hear that he's going beyond fingers in his playing.

Asteffen,

As you said, he is promising and has talent.  By doing so many standards, he is setting himself up for comparisons.

Browse iTunes and listen to the other versions of many of the songs.  Jaki Byard has an interesting version of "Giant Steps".
Bill Evans "Lucky to Be Me" is SO emotional.
He also has a great version of "Darn That Dream"

Art Tatum has an EXTREMELY technical version of "Love For Sale" that has ridiculous fluidity.  Ahmad Jamal has an innovative interpretation of it too...
