Saw this on another site and wondered if you'd seen it and what you thought of it:

I particularly like from about 4min30 to 5min30 where I recoginise the tune (what is it?) and then he starts some ragtime.

Well worth a watch.

I thought it was great, if not thought provoking....
IMHO, it illustrates that there are great musicians in other fields outside of jazz that are absolutley fantastic. I remember once talking to a guy in Brook Mays that was a fabulous Jazz pianist.

When I started asking him about people like prince, stevie wonder, and other "big" names outside of jazz he said he didn't think they were that talented. I was very surprized, because some of those people are far more talented than one would think, in fact some of those people can play some incredible Jazz piano, but you wouldn't know it from listening to the stuff that got them rich and famous. :)

Funny how myopic one can get about the musci they love and revere some much.

We may occasionally mock professional 'pop' musicians, but they nearly always have some talent, however they express it.

Perhaps the most myopic are classical pianists. Over on Pianostreet forums they keep having threads about the greatest pianist etc.  There was one about Evgeny Kissin recently I eventually felt the need to comment on, saying that just because someone can play and interpret other peoples classical compositions well there's still no way they could ever be described as the greatest pianist of the 20th century.

Emerson's playing was fast and it seemed to lose clarity (pedalling?); to me only parts were musically appealing.  Still, he's a bl**dy good pianist by any standard.
