LearnJazzPiano.com archives: Left hand walking bass / stride combination?

I don't have the technical capability (or really even the desire) to do this but I was thinking this might????? sound interesting:

First, take a 4/4 C major blues. Each beat is divided into sixteenth notes. I will refer to the last sixteenth note before the next beat as "a" (as in 1e&a 2e&a 3e&a). In other words, "a" is pretty much where you would potentially comp in a swing style (anticipating the beat).

Left hand plays a walking bass line but on 2a and 4a moves up like in stride and hits a voicing, whether it's 2 3 or 4 note voicing. So the left hand's first bar could be played like:

1 2 e&  a     3  4 e&      a
C D   (E Bb) Eb  E    (E G Bb D)

etc.

This probably makes no sense so I added a link with a MIDI file that tries to do this. I made this MIDI using the editor so it's not very "human" like.

Let me know what you think about this. It's probably not original...

Makes me think of Lennie Tristano - I think he did a lot of stuff where he'd be playing walking bass lines using just the 4th and 5th fingers of his left hand and playing chords with the other three fingers. His playing's not very human either!
