LearnJazzPiano.com archives: Help with chords

After going through some of the lessons there's still one thing i'm not entirely sure about.

In the Blues sections it has the various chord progressions. The thing that confuses me is say that I play the root note with my left hand, what notes should I play in my right hand in regards to the key. If, say, I am playing in the F blues key but the chord is a G7 for example, should the chord contain the notes from the F blues key or the G blues key? Or both?

Sorry thats not very clear, if it makes no sense i'll have a go at rewording it.

Thanks for any advice :)

A horizontal soloing approach would have you playing one of the F blues scales over the G7.

There are many overlapping notes between several of the blues scales and the scales that are possible over a "stand alone" G7 chord.

A vertical soloing approach would have you playing exclusively notes from one of the the G7 scales.

The blues typically utilizes a horizontal approach to soloing, however a jazzy blues very often uses vertical elements to give a strong tip of the hat to the underlying chords in the progression.

Bottom line:

Both approaches will work and many options exist. Your ear must be the final judge of what works and what doesn't.
