LearnJazzPiano.com archives: Miles's later stuff

It seems I'm always finding new different sounding stuff I like from Miles.  First I listened to the "first great quintet" stuff, the "second great quintet" stuff, and his in-between stuff.  Lately I've started getting into his later stuff, from "in a silent way" to "agharta".  I've also listened to his late 80's stuff on and off.

Is anyone else here into Miles's later stuff?

Definitely, although some of it is better than the others. The Cellar Door sessions are great, and Get Up With It is one of my favorite albums.

I saw Miles live in the 80s...I was really excited about it, but severely dissappointed when I got there.  He spent most of the concert wandering around th stage with his back to the audience, spitting a note out here and there over some one-chord rock and funk like grooves...Granted, I'm more educated now than I was then, so maybe I missed something, but all I remember was being dissappointed...

I also remember seeing him say he hated all his earlier stuff that everyone loves so much - hmmm....weird guy :)

What I liked best from Miles later on was the album "Decoy". Some great tracks on that one, followed by a rather weak "You're Under Arrest". "Aura" was too 'out there' for my taste, Tutu was OK, as was "Amandla"
I too saw Miles round '89 or so, and he did a lot of material from the "Amandla" CD, which very fusionish-funk stuff--but done very well. And he had the utter nerve to die on my wedding day shortly therafter, the bastard.

Musicians, like many artists, writers etc, are often weird indeed.
