anyone heard this brillant trick where o.p. lays a root on 1 and 3 and a chord on 2 and 4? if anyone's listened to dizzy gillespie and op's album it features it, and does anyone know how to imitate it? because i'm interested in learning it.

I'm unfamiliar with the recording your talking about.
Feel is everything in jazz. Concentrate on the length of the chords in the left hand, as well as the dynamics, experiment until you get the sound you like, only, do it at very slow swing. mm 60 is enough to retain a triplet feel.
Listen to Dave McKenna also for a similar swing feel. I'm going to venture to say that Hank Jones has a completely different feel from the above two. It's really helpful to listen to other musicians to help clarify the sound you're going for.
Have fun.
