| I'm laughing my azz off right now, CynBad. Seriously -- (?) -- Bill learned by copying Bud Powell. So, go copy Bud Powell. Or copy Bill Evans. It's not like there's an instructional book that will get you there -- Bill Evans himself warns against people who want to take a shortcut in his own "Universal Mind" video. Find a copy of that, or at the very least the McPartland interview/session. If you won't/can't transcribe, then go to the source as he's expressed himself in words. | |

| Dave Thompson can play very much like Bill. I suggest you ask him how he practiced. Then maybe you can post his answer here !! Nihinjin http://www.davidthompsonjazz.com/biography.html | |

| If you won't/can't transcribe, get a book with Bill Evans transcriptions. | |

| I probably started playing jazz after listening to Bill Evans. Get 'Portrait in Jazz' 'Kind of Blue' and 'Blues and the abstract truth' and play along to them. Try to emulate his relaxed 8th note swing feel... I'd work out a few rootless L.H voicings to get you started and practice playing over simple turnarounds (eg. Cmaj7 A-7 D-7 G7 ) so EGAD for Cmaj7 , EGBC for A-7 etc. Peri's scope on 'Portrait in Jazz' is one you apply this to.. Learn the introduction to Waltz for Debby... | |

| On this website, in the Transcriptions section, there is a transcription of Bill Evans solo on Falling Grace. That short solo contains the essence of his characteristic arpeggios, lines, shapes, and rhythmic phrasing. Highly reommended. | |

| I like the way he used tritone substitutions in a version of "All of You", though if you over-do tritone subs it can sound crap.. I'm sure you'll get the balance though | |

| I forgot about the "Intuition" album -- good choice. Another good source for material is the "Intermodulation" album -- both JIm Hall and Bill Evans play some *very* characteristic stuff on the standard "I've Got You Under My Skin." Good opportunity to learn some of those moves on top of a standard (with very simple, repetitive changes). | |
