| Hi, I would like to ask for some suggestions about the classic jazz trio recordings which feature not just a superb jazz drummer, but a trio recording where the drummer is the musician who truly keeps and moves the piece. Not just a trio recording where the drummer has a great solo, but more a trio setting of a piece where rhythmic complexities ot the piece demand that the drummer takes the spotlight quite naturally, and not by way of percussion solo. | I recommend Enrico Pieranunzi Trio with Joey Baron on drums and Marc Johnson on bass. Why does the drummer have to be the leader? A trio is a trio where all parts should be equal. I think Joey Baron is the tastiest of the trio drummers out there. Joey is felt and not heard. It is magical in my opinion. | |

| Hi, I started the thread and I think I should have worded my question a bit differently. Even so, the above suggestions will surely help me to find what I was looking for. But what I'm looking for is less about the trio itself, and more about a composition in trio form that showcases the percussionist, but not just because the arranger gave the percussionist more measures, solos. I'm trying to locate some compositions in trio form where the composition itself is such that no matter which trio treats the composition, then by default it is the percussionist that makes or breaks the performance....even if the percussionist does not have a solo. The reason I'm seeking this kind of composition is that I have a relative who is a consummate snare drummer who appreciates many kinds of music, but has not been introduced yet to the jazz idiom. I want to show him a few pieces of music where he will at once understand not only that jazz is so cool, but then that the jazz trio is such a unique distillation of everything jazz, but especially, I want him to hear how the percussionist can drive and carry the piece, and that the percussionist is not just keeping time. I feel like I have only one or two chances to catch this kid's imagination with jazz, and I want to plan his exposure to jazz somewhat intelligently! r_m | |

| I would seriously suggest any of Cindy Blackman's small ensemble recordings. She's a drummer and when it's her group, the music is definitely driven by the drummer throughout (not just solos). I've just recently been listening to a lot of her stuff on pandora.com. | |

| Jeff Hamilton is a great at musical drumming. I'd recommend older stuff when he was with guys like Ray Brown or Monty Alexander. His newer stuff is OK, but he's got different kind of players with him that don't seem to have as much soul as the guys he used to play with. Robert Thomas Jr. is an amazing percussionist that plays with jazz trios. Sometimes hard to find stuff with him on it, but in my opinion, the out right best jazz percussionist the world has seen. | |
