| Hi. Does anyone have any ideas/reharmonisations for the first two bars of this tune. The Eb chord seems pretty static especially when playing solo... thanks | |

| You could play chords that walk up the scale, like I Ebmaj7 F-7 I G-7 Abmaj7 I or I Ebmaj7 F-7 I G-7 F-7 I or you could play a leading chord to the D half-dim in the 3rd bar (can't remember how to make the little circle with a slash) I Ebmaj7 I Eb7 I D-7b5 I G7 I You could also sub of the A7+9 for the Eb7, and turn play the D-7bf as D7+9 I Ebmaj7 I A7+9 I D7+9 I G7+9 I You could also put ii-7b5 chords in front of any or all those dom7+9 chords, like I Eb maj7 I E-7b5 A7+9 I A-7b5 D7+9 I D-7b5 G7+9 I Just a few possibilities | |

| "and turn play the D-7bf as D7+9" should read and play the D-7b5 as D7+9 | |

| Oh, one more possibility that just came to mind is you could play I Bb-7 Eb7 I in place of the E-7b5 A7+9 in the second bar of the last example, I think I like the way that sounds better. | |

| u can always sub 3 min 7 for 1 maj so G min 7 for Eb maj 7, then you have option of making Gmin7 into G7 or make a 11 v G min 7 C7 or G7 C7 or then get out there with all the dom substitions or even the countdown sub for the ii v that you have subed for the Eb maj 7 chord. of course the posibilities are infinite | |

| since you're talking issue with the Eb - you could start on Am7b5 - so the first two bars might be: Am7b5 D7b9 |Db9#11 Cm11 | | |

| another one: | Gbo7 F-7 | Ebma7 A7alt | Abma7 G7 | etc. | |

| When I was starting out I used to think two measures of the same chord was a dead spot and I too looked for filler chords. That was because my right hand didn't have much to say. Now days I like to play less chords and actualy remove some chords from progressions. I don't care for all those subs folks are suggesting, too cumbersome and digressive from the ptogression for my tastes. My favorite device for two measures of a Major 7th chords is too simply alter it slightly: || Eb Maj7 Eb 6 | Eb b6 Eb 5 || or the opposite: || Eb5 Eb+5 | Eb6 Eb Maj7 || | |

| I agree those subs are quite a departure from the original progression. For what it's worth, I usually only use those sporadically - here and there as a sort of surprise. (in fact I've never used the one I suggested - it just popped into my head as another possible answer to the orginal question) If you're playing with a good bass player, you should be able to do things like that on a whim... | |

| Hi Jazz+, To use Line-Clichés in this occasion is also a good idea to get movement into the harmonically static room of 2 bars tonic chord. I wouldn't valuate the different possibilities of reharmonisation to much, because it is a kind of personal flavour that everybody builds up by time. | |
