Hi I am working on Search for Peace as it is one of the most beautiful melodies. In the Sher Real book most of the chords are slash chords with bass notes indicated - this makes it more difficult for me to understand the underlying harmony. I have noticed that quartel voicings seem to occur naturally as I work on the chords. I want to keep it simple and not over complicate the voicings - does anyone have any tips? At this stage I want to voice the melody - it seems that chords built from the Jazz melodic minor scale may be appropriate? (I am studying Levine). This more modern form of jazz is new to me but I love it). Cheers Bro'

It's not a tune based on fourth voicings, "Passion Dance" is an example of a fourth voicings tune. Playing "Search For Peace", the only spot that is well suited for a right handed fourth voicing is under the melody at the D7 #9 (in the first measure when Eb is in the lead.) Of course you need to support that right hand fourth voicing with a Root, 3rd and 7th in the left hand.

Hi Bro- Why not play whatever your ear tells you is okay. You can make fourth voicings work on any tune, if you use your ears to direct you. Any ear based decision is going to be more powerful than what you'll read someone say. If you're really hearing the fourths play em, make shine, that's what will make you sound different than jazz+ regarding melodic minor harmony, I'm in the middle of applying that stuff to my left hand stride playing, so it doesn't have to be thought of as being too modern, just different colors.
