LearnJazzPiano.com archives: yamaha p-250 in medium velocity curve

I've been away from a real piano for so long, my touch is completely disorientated.  I practice on my yamaha p250 all the time.. but I find the default "medium" velocity curve a little too harsh, and I find myself trying to play softer and softer, 'till the keys barely trigger the hammer...  I'm wondering if the "heavy" setting is more appropriate, or am I just playing too hard?  Anyone have similar problems?

I think I need to find me a piano to practice on..  anyone know a good place I can book rehersal space at in manhattan?

I use the Yamaha p250 all the time - and I agree that the velocity curve (AKA 'Touch Response') on medium needs to be re-set to 'Heavy' - at least for my touch - giving me good dynamic range without too often triggering the full velocity samples that I agree sound a bit harsh.

I have also tweaked Grand Piano 1 using the voice edit key - I have reduced the Volume to 107 instead of 115, reduced the brightness parameter from 0 to -18, and reduced the harmonic content from 0 to -21. There are probably other adjustments that could be made too.

I use this edited voice all the time and find it as good a grand simulation as I can find - though of course it doesn't come close to matching the real instrument. The major advantage I find is that this instrument makes it easy to get a tolerably good recording.

hey wait a second.. you're doug mckenzie..  hehe.  funny you responded, because it wasn't untill I saw your videos that I realized that you could get a sweeter sound from the p-250.

Will definitely try your preset parameters.  Awesome work on the videos, and awesome playing!  I'm just a beginner, and so alot of the your advice on the videos just fly past me, but some day, I hope I can put them into practice. :-)

I agree with Doug's adjustment of the brightness and harmonic content, but I heard excessive brightness on my P250 mostly in the octave or two above middle C. Using voice edit, I set the high eq to 630 Hz and dropped the level -3db. Along with brightness and harmonic contents settings in the -10 to -15 range, this calmed the stridency.
