| i'm a piano player on a band...well it's a show band... but i only know the basics... but i have a certain question... how can you recognize on what scale the player used on a certain song? say for example, you listen to a jazz song and then there's a lot of scales involved right? how would i know on what scales are being used...well it's pretty hard because all i know is it depends on the player on what scale does he want to apply... but just by listening to it, would i know? if it's in the key of E, how would i know if it's pentatonic, ionian, dorian, etc... that they're using...please help me.. do i need to start with something to widen my understanding? thanks a lot... eldridge | |

| Well, the way you can tell what they are playing is to have trained yourself to hear it. It just takes work.........a lot of transcribing, and a lot of playing. It won't happen overnight. I would start by finding a fairly simple solo to transcribe(Wynton Kelly's Solo on "Freddie the Freeloader" is a good start.....it's on Miles' Kind of Blue album........it will have some things that will probably throw you, but, for the most part, it's simple). In addition to this, gather materials(books, DVDs, teachers, YouTube, whatever you can find) that have explanations of the different scales and modes used in jazz. Just remember, you canNOT learn only from the books.......you MUST transcribe. Good luck. | |

| wow thanks... that helps a lot... is just like that you need to listen to jazz all of he time in order to adapt the sound...:D and i also have one problem... i can't read notes...:( think that's a major problem of mine...and i'm kinda' working on the HANON thing right now... i can play music with a taste of jazz but i'm still not contented... thanks for the advice...:D | |

| and by the way i would reall appreciate if you guys would explain to me how do chords when it comes to jazz...say for example you are comping only with the singer...just the two of you...how could i make my chords sound jazzy? i mean a friend of mine once told me that i should learn how to add 13ths, 9ths,11ths, etc...i can already do that, but with just one chord position... how can i make a simple A chord sound to a jazz sound with both hands? please help me.. thanks to all...
