LearnJazzPiano.com archives: My right hand pinky has a mind of its own
ProAce -- 03/16/2007, 00:23:35 -- #33820
Whenever I play, I notice my right hand pinky tends to stick out. It doesn't affect affect my playing, but when I watch recordings of myself, it just looks ugly. I'm not sure why I do that, but I tend to do it when playing more difficult passages with the 2nd and 3rd digits of my right hand. Is this a common habit, and if so, is it important that I fix it?  If so, how would I go about fixing this particular habit of mine? It's a bit annoying.

Thanks in advance.

Practice playing with curled fingers, like they teach in piano lessons. How long have you been playing?

About 14 years, but I'm only 19. I can play very accurate and very fast if I want to. Thing is I was self taught, so I think that's why I have that nasty habit.

I was also self taught and play pro now and im your age, you will grow out of it, its just a case of playing as much as you can.  When you have to play for hours on end bored out of your head you'll naturally stop doing it, i had the same problem but one day i noticed it wasn't there any more, don't worry about it.
