I inquired about how appropriate this workshop was for beginners. Aebersold recommended the "piano combo" which caters to folks not quite ready for one of the regular workshop combos. Has anyone had any experience with this?

I was at the Aebersold Workshop last summer.  I was not in the piano combo, but I know a little about it.  It is basically a room full of digital keyboards with headphones.  The instructor (Phil Degreg was one) teaches basics like rootless voicings, etc.  Although the workshop was good for me,  I would not recommend it for a beginner.  I think your money would be better spent on a good teacher because you would get more individual instruction. If I had been able to find a teacher that is what I would have done.  Peace - Ken

I was there in Phil's good piano combo a few years ago and would agree with all that kaon99 said. I would recommend being comfortable with playing and understanding 2-5-1s, extensions, inversons and alt chords too before spending that kind of money there.  It cost a lot and you might as well be in a position to get a lot back from the spend. Having said that I struggled but had a great time and learned a lot especially with Dan Haerle and in Mike Tracey's theory classes. My wind instrument friend also got a lot out of it but she is an advanced player.

Hmmm...  I have always felt that the Aebersold workshop was probably the most "beginner-friendly" of all the workshops.  It's very "education" oriented, and much of the faculty is comprised of educators.
You do need to know scales, intervals, and triads, and you need to know how to play your instrument.  But as far as JAZZ goes, it's definitely got classes at the beginning level.
Port Townsend (Centrum), on the other hand, seems to cater more to advanced players.

Just got an announcement that Piano is full for Aebersold week one, and only 5 piano spots left for week two.
