LearnJazzPiano.com archives: keyboard stand too high

just occured to me that my keyboard stand is high.  My arms are barely parellel, if not almost going at an upward angle onto the keys, and it's really stressful.  Part of the problem is that my adjustable chair only goes up that high..  but still, the keyboard stand itself seems too high anyway.

So, I looked around and found that the general standard for real pianos was at 28' from ground to the top of the keys, give or take depending on the manufacturer.  And mine is a little over 30.  My p-250 is about 5 1/4' thick, so to reach 28', I'd need a stand that goes to about 22 3/4'.  Well, I'm surprised quick search at sam ash shows that nothing goes down that low.  Actually, they're all really high, at around 27-28' to even higher, probably for standing performances.  Turns out compared to the other sam ash stuff, my current setup would be one of the lower ones.

So, my question is, where do you guys get your stands?  Any known brand that makes good ones for sitting down use?

I use a Quiklok WS-550.  Not sure how low it can go.  If you're otherwise satisfied with your stand, it would probably be cheaper to find a bench or stool (adjustable or not) which puts you in a non-stressful relationship to your keyboard.

I removed the legs for my WS-550 stands and they are now 23" tall.

Actualy I removed the extension legs from inside the legs.

Yamaha makes a matching stand - it's just the right height and looks better than the quiklok, too. I forget the model no., but I can look it up later if needed.

It's better to have your arms in the "up" direction than the other way around, so be sure not to make your keyboard stand too short.  Having arms going "down" will cause health problems, but the other way around, though maybe not natural feeling, will never give you health problems (shoulders, tendonitis, etc)

I use Quick Lock for my stands.
