LearnJazzPiano.com archives: I'm in the mood for Bud
Brotherdavies -- 06/29/2007, 05:22:17 -- #35634
I have the Amazing Bud Powell volume 1 and The Essential Bud Powell. These have the most famous Powell recordings.

Where should I go next? There is so much Bud on Amazon - what is good, what is bad?

Any suggestions most welcome - particularly Bud on Standards.

Cheers

"Ultimate Bud Powell" contains tracks selected by Chick Corea, it's a great compilation of Bud at his finest.

Bud Plays Bird.  Good if you want to hear later-era Powell play some Bebop standards.

Thanks guys

I have just ordered Live in Laussanne. I'll get the other CDs soon as well. I'm also listening to Bird at the moment and my playing is improving as a result!

Cheers

I would add 'Un Poco Loco' to your amazing Bud Powell listing.

The first track on Ultimate Bud Powell is Temopus Fugit and is the best solo I have ever heard Bud play, his drive was at its peak:

I am listening to the Live In Laussanne CD right now. It is superb and beautiful. Buds lines take you on a wonderful journey - twisting and turning - hang on tight and don't pause to look back!!

'Un Poco Loco' is indeed an amazing track - it's on The Amazing BP Vol 1.

I like 'Bud Plays Bird' (Blue Note) because the tempos seem a bit more relaxed, which makes for easier transcribing. Also, the version of 'Ornithology' on this record has the proper melody, unlike the one on ABP Vol 1, which is the variation (as given in most fake books).

'Time Waits' has some pretty intense playing .

I've gotten a lot out of transcribing such tunes verbatim -- R and L hands:

"The Fruit"
"Oblivion"
"Ornithology"

and many others, especially, his versions of blues in F, on many recordings.
