LearnJazzPiano.com archives: How to play piano like this?

How do you play piano this way?  Do you need to learn music theory or something? He plays some really nice chords, but I have no idea what he is playing. Do you think he plays 2-6-2-5-1? http://youtube.com/watch?v=fv0RBHKEGaQ

He's playing in a "stop time style", lot's of breaks with rests.
He starts out like this:
| Gmaj  B7#9  | E-7  D-7 G7  |  Cmaj B- B-7 | A-7 D7sus |

Those changes are similar to the same pattern as Blue For Alice by Charlie Parker.

How do I learn that?

I get shivers for some reason when I hear those chords. His voice helps also. LOL.

This is more accurate:

| Gmaj  B7#9  | Emi7 /  Dmi7 G7 |  Cmaj / Bmi Bmi7 | Ami7 D#dim7 |
| Emi7 /  Dm-7 G7 | C /  F7 Bb7 | Am-7  |  D7 sus  ||

Forgot the flat sign in measure 3:

| Gmaj  B7#9  | Emi7 /  Dmi7 G7 |  Cmaj / Bbmi Bmi7 | Ami7 D#dim7 |
| Emi7 /  Dm-7 G7 | C /  F7 Bb7 | Am-7  |  D7 sus  ||

It reminds me of the chords to "Nothing From Nothing" by Billy Preston:

Thats exactly what he's playing?

And again in "New York State Of Mind" by Billy Joel:

Pretty exactly :

| Gmaj  B7#9  | Emi7 /  Dmi7 G7 |  Cmaj / Bbmi Bmi7 | Ami7 D#dim7 |
| Emi7 /  Dm-7 G7 | C /  F7 Bb7 | Am-7  |  D7 sus  ||

Jazz+ -- 07/23/2007, 21:36:34 -- #36032
It's also like the first four bars of "Georgia"

Jazz+ -- 07/23/2007, 22:21:55 -- #36032
Of course the Bmi7 to Bbmi7 was type backwards (Bb7 works for the Bbmi7 too)

| Gmaj  B7#9  | Emi7 /  Dmi7 G7 |  Cmaj / Bmi7 Bbmi7 | Ami7 D#dim7 |
| Emi7 /  Dm-7 G7 | C /  F7 Bb7 | Am-7  |  D7 sus  ||

re- "Do you need to learn music theory or something?"..a few years back I was over here a lot and for people who might see "music theory" as something unapproachable and hard to deal with vs. "just playing "etc....I put this together..some of the links are down by now but a lot of good sites are still online.let me know over there(360 degrees) if you or anyone else want help understanding the logic behind specific musical situations..

Good catch it is B7 b9, my #9 was another typo.

|| Gmaj  B7b9  | Emi7 /  Dmi7 G7 |  Cmaj / Bmi7 Bbmi7 | Ami7 D#dim7 |
| Emi7 /  Dmi7 G7 | C /  F7 Bb7 | Ami7  |  D7 sus  ||

I figured it out by listening to it a couple of times. I could recognize the changes by ear having played similar progressions many times. I also recognized its pathway by the roman numerals (I see/hear the root movement)  so I can play it in any key.

|| Gmaj  B7b9  | Emi7 /  Dmi7 G7 |  Cmaj / Bmi7 Bb7 | Ami7 B7+5/D# |
| Emi7 /  Dmi7 G7 | C /  F7 Bb7 | Ami7  |  D7 sus  ||

note the changes in the 3rd and 4th bar.
