| I thought I'd share my new youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bC6T9VylHEA Still a bit stiff, but I had fun learning it. It's played from a transcription. Feel free to comment... | |

| Tasteful, rhythmic, and enjoyable. Don't worry about the stiffness, just keep playing this old chestnut until it becomes like a favorite pair of shoes. | |

| Sounds good to me! You have a good ear for rhythm and harmony. | |

| Thanks both. Yeah, I figure the stiffness is something that just magically go away with practice and time. As far as tasteful, it's from a Mike Ledonne transcription book. It's 20+ tunes, more or less by order of difficulty (whatever that means). It's accessible to a beginner like myself, yet some of them are actually very tasty and elegant. Sorry I can't really take credit for the creative part. Just learning to play from sheet ... I'll probably blog about this at some point. Considering the amount of thoughts and questions that go through my heads... | |

| it's seems like you pretty much got the etude nailed. I think a next good step would be to start to improvise along with the play along. Keep up the good work! | |

| Paul, I don't think I have it quite nailed yet, but I totally agree with your recommendation. I started working on the next etude which is Satin Doll. It's significantly more challenging but I'll get it in a month or so probably. Once I get that done, I was actually thinking of doing my own version of the head (satin doll), in a somewhat similar style, then play some of this on top of an Aebersold track or BiaB. I figure Down By the riverside isn't the most popular standard, but maybe that's just a lame excuse. One trap I've fallen into: these etudes take me so much time to learn, I tend to neglect the rest. I've taken steps to correct this, but I just get too comfy playing from a sheet... I appreciate your help! | |

| I'm pretty sure that's the changes to "The Preacher" by Horace Silver. You played it pretty well. But there are subtle things in the timing and the swing eights that you could improve. I hear you might be a tiny bit too far layed back behind the beat for that style and the swing eighths might benefit from more accent on the "+"s and less accent on the downs. | |

| I take it back, it's not too far layed back, but I still think the eights could swing harder. It does sound like a pro. | |

| Check out the way Horace Silver plays those changes on "The Preacher." | |

| Jazz+, Many thanks!! I had assumed down by the riverside because of the first bars. I will definetely check that tune out right now, it's on my portable player as a matter of fact. You guys never cease to amaze me. I really appreciate the compliment. It's good to hear I can play --something--, even if I didn't arrange it. When you say more accent on the "+", you mean on the beat? (1-2-3-4) You think vocalizing (a la antiJV) might help? --thanks! | |

| I think Jazz+ means accent the off beats yes, vocalizing the solo would be a good exercise too. | |
