LearnJazzPiano.com archives: Best places to hear good jazz

Hello everyone,
I'll cross the atlantic for the first time next monday and stay in the US for 2 weeks. NYC, SF, LA and Las Vegas are our main destinations. Would you please list some good places to hear Jazz in these cities (I mean places where you like to go, where to have dinner while listening jazz for instance, not necessarily the places you find when you write "jazzclubs in New York" on google, you see what I mean ...).
Thanks in advance.

Maybe Harlem, New York or in the Central Park area would have some good jazz. I've never been to Harlem, but I know they probably play some good jazz there. Central Park I've been to and I know they play all sorts of jazz there.

In SF there's so so Pearl's Jazz Club featuring mostly local players. Across the SF Bay in Oakland by the waterfront is the amazing Yoshi's Jazz Club which some say is the finest in the world. It features world class performers.

If you are in NY on Sunday morning, I'll highly recommend a gospel mass in Harlem. There are at least 2 very popular (touristy) ones. If you've never seen a real -- all american -- gospel mass. You're in for a treat.

Merci Knotty, thanks everyone, I'll try that.
Knotty I was thinking about a gospel mass but I'll be in NYC from monday to friday, not sunday, so I'm not sure I can find smthg during the week, we'll see ... anyway is it safe or not to go to Harlem by ourself, I and my wife ? or do you recommand a guided tour to get there ?

Seemed safe during daytime. We took the metro to get there, and it was fine. I'm sure you'll find Gospel in other cities also, but can't really help.
Small's and Fat Cat are in Greenwhich village. Small's a bit hard to find, so be sure to locate before you go. We got lost and noone within maybe 100 yards had ever heard of the place...

OK thy I'll try that, and also maybe there's a paper magazine in each city that gives the hot spots for jazz, we'll see.
